painting beadboard ceiling

We put beadboard on our kitchen ceiling to basically cover up all kinds of nasty stuff that was done to it when it got a 70's-'80s remodel (several fluorescent lights plugged into an outlet box put in the middle of the ceiling, above suspended plexiglas). We also like the flavor of the beadboard as it's in several other places in the house (1916 vintage). The kitchen is wide enough that there had to be butt joints to span all the way across. They're staggered in a pattern. Should those joints be puttied before painting--is that even possible--or is it part of the flavor to be able to see those spots?
