Comments (15)The best vinyl shops are in the Lower Haight, a pretty funky but fun area. Jack's Record Cellar and Rooky Ricardo's have been around since I moved here 27 years ago. From there, you can walk west about about eight blocks to Upper Haight where all the hippie shops are. On your way from Lower to Upper Haight, turn right on Pierce Street to stop at Mickey's Monkey, a funky used stuff store. Then walk two more blocks down Haight and turn right on Divisadero. 1 1/2 blocks down on the left is a store called The Other Shop. It has mostly mid century mod stuff with some fun vintage clothes in the back. Golddust mentioned the Goodwill at Mission and S. Van Ness. There is another one in the Upper Haight. The Mission District has several used bookstores and another great thrift store called Community Thrift on Valencia Street. Actually, the Mission District may be fun for both daughters. Used bookstores, used and new hip clothing stores, galleries with works by young artists very influenced by Japanese pop culture, Clarion Alley murals (see link below), and a comfortable lesbian presence on Valencia Street. As marti8a found out, the Mission Street bus can be real (ahem) urban experience. I would recommend taking a cab or BART. You can easily rent a car from downtown for a day to go to Muir Woods. Also, the Dickens Fair mentioned by Fun2BHere is really fun, especially if your daughters have read any Dickens in school. Have a great trip! Comments (20)Would have been more considerate for you to start a new thread rather than pollute someone else's thread when your post has nothing to do with the thread's content. Regarding your water problems... There are a variety of less effective ways to attempt to treat water which you seem to have discovered but it really is as easy as 1-2-3 1. Certified lab test to determine what needs to be treated. 2. Have a water treatment professional evaluate the environment and decide on the most inclusive and comprehensive treatment and hardware required. 3. Have a water treatment professional install and configure the equipment for correct and efficient operation....See MoreAnother Thread on Wood Kitchens

The place we're talking to for the Armstrong cabinets is actually a local granite place, so their cabinet "showroom" doesn't have a lot of options. When discussing our plans for the cabinets, they were confident they could beat or at least come close to the lowes quote in price. And their lead time between order and install of the cabinets blows lowes out of the water, so we thought we'd at least get a quote. I'll just have to see if we have an actual Armstrong showroom in the area to see Cherry Crystal in person. It sounds like three doors might be helpful: the two Armstrong colors and the Kraftmaid praline. Closing is scheduled for a little less than two weeks, so I'd best get moving on those. :) Thanks for all the comments....See MoreAging ... our stuff / ourSELVES ...
Comments (112)I have no problem with sexual display as entertainment, and for it being on the Superbowl half time show. I watched similar Las Vegas kinds of programs as a kid, on the Sonny and Cher show, or even Ed Sullivan, for example. But it is what it is, don't pretend it is something else. You are going to have kids see that and become fans of it. I loved Cher, kids loved Madonna, etc. But the ability to also understand that it is fantasy, that it is only one way to be artful, that sex as entertainment is a whole lot different than sex in real life, and that objectification of something for art or the sake of selling a product, is not the same thing as the soul of the real deal. A wise entertainer will make it clear that their onstage persona is not the real them. I don't think Jennifer Lopez or Shakira have ever claimed that it was. The show was very well choreographed and there was a lot of female talent on display, but it was blatantly sexual at times, and I don't think we should pretend otherwise, even for our kids. I know there are a lot of people who don't think words or non verbal images or environment has effects on people, but I'm not one of them. Many of the concepts behind personal fashion and home decorating are built around the science of facts and aesthetic principles indicating that it does, and that it is profound. Sexual display is the purvey of the nightclub, and football is the purvey of stylized territorial conquest, no reason to not pair them for adults. Not sure about the kids . . . probably fine if they have gads of other things going on in their lives. Who didn't grow up listening to their parents George Carlin tapes or records and the seven words . . . another kind of shock. We survived....See MoreDLM2000-GW
