Kitty likes Greek yogurt

I really like the Greek Gods yogurt I buy at Walmart, I usually get the strawberry and honey flavor. My cat Navi who ordinarily does not beg for people food will every single time actually come from wherever she is to jump up on me and try to get some of my yogurt (and I give her a little bit). She doesn't do this with anything else, not even other dairy products such as ice cream or cheese. Very odd.

Just make sure it's a very little bit. Cats can't taste sweet but the yogurts can be high in sugar which isn't good for cats. If it's the plain unsweetened, I wouldn't think it'd be as much of an issue.

Yogurt is great if your pet has diarrhea. Stick to plain for your pets.

I don't know if I've ever tried returning a fresh (refrigerated) food item. Canned goods, dry goods, no problem but I can see that a store would not be allowed to take back produce, and anything that requires refrigeration even if still sealed. Didn't think of that, but how do they know it was kept refrigerated while you had it? Good point. Guess this means I'm stuck with the $25 ham I bought especially for my mom, even if she tells me she would have been fine with a ham steak while the rest of us eat the hickory-smoked ham I have in the freezer. grainlady, Re: your last post, I have tried several different started cultures. The cultures were much more of an issue when I was incubating regular yogurt. Some produced more whey than others. The required incubation time could vary dramatically also. I didn't like the taste of whey at all, and when I realized about the high carb content in regular yogurt, stopped trying to improve my homemade regular yogurt. I have found it much easier to make greek yogurt. Since the whey is drained, the resulting yogurt tastes better. The taste of whey is really repellent to me. The goal is to improve the protein to carb ratio of my yogurt. In theory, if I drained more whey, I could remove all the carbs without removing all the protein, and thus have a nearly infinite protein to carb ratio :) However, I have done the math and I don't think that's possible. If 85% of the weight of the yogurt was drained as whey, the resulting yogurt would have 256 calories per cup, 47.7g of protein and 18.24g of sugar. Ie. a 2.6:1 ratio of protein to carb. About the same as the store yogurt, yes, but also with 2x as many calories. My guess is that would be some inedible thick yogurt ! However, I just don't think it's possible to remove that much whey. There has to be some process through which more sugar is removed than just by straining the whey. That, or I'm using the wrong nutritional information for the liquid whey. Adding protein like gelatin would work, it would increase the protein : carb ratio, it but would also increase the calories to an amount much higher than the amount in store brand yogurt. Right now my home made yogurt has the same calories as store brand - only the protein : carb ratio is off.

I Googled this topic a little over a week ago and there is a list of different places that took polls - like Better Homes and Gardens and several other polls. Fage got the best results on most polls. Since i can't drive any longer I have to wait for my DD to bring some home to me. So far she has only gone to Wal-Mart and they only had Dannon's Oikos. She got me Blueberry, Strawberry and Vanilla and I liked all of them! It's not chalky or too tart as some of the tasters said of different brands. One of the Wal-mart stores had a 4 pack of Wal-Mart brand but she was afraid to buy it. Now that I know someone likes it I'll try it. We have 2 Wal-Mart stores close to us. The closest one has Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt but the other one just has regular Yoplait. Dr. Oz talked about Greek Yogurt a couple weeks ago and said we should eat one before every meal. Very healthy and it fills you up [so you can't eat much else I would say.] LOL That's a good thing. I've already lost almost 5 lbs.

I bought a little gizmo from Amazon.com that makes it handy to always have yogurt cheese ready to use. It's essentially a little plastic bucket with a strainer that lifts out easily to remove the whey from regular yogurt, and it has a tight fitting lid for storing in the fridge. In a few weeks I reaped my investment from purchasing it in what I saved paying top dollar for Greek yogurt. You get the same result as the coffee cone method described above, but the simple gadget makes it much more convenient for me to make, store and keep on hand. Almost every weekday morning I have a bowl of steel cut oatmeal, a soy bacon strip and a cup of fresh fruit with a dollop of yogurt cheese and a sprinkle of wheat germ on it for breakfast. The yogurt makes the fruit seem like a yummy indulgence and it's a great way to get in a serving of calcium.

Yogurt is very bad for cats unless it is the plain unsweetened one. That one actually has health benefits when fed in small quantities.......a tsp or so.

I don't like yogurt but my two kittens want butter every morning when I am buttering my toast. They each only get a small smidgeon.

Many cats are lactose intolerant and can develop stomach/intestinal distress from dairy products. They're best avoided.

Yoghurt can indeed CAUSE diarrhea.

Isn't yogurt one of the dairy products that the lactose intolerant can have?

Now you have to find her a new treat! My cat used to love to lick a spoonful of baby food chicken or beef :)

My cats loved canned pumpkin, which is very good for them, esp with intestinal problems. Not the pie filling, just plain pumpkin.

Yes, many people who have mild lactose intolerance may eat aged cheeses, yogurt, butter, kefir and goat milk.

With supplemental treats, it's important to make sure the quantities are very small (for calorie purposes) and that the pet doesn't think the treat is a reason to stop eating its regular food.

Too many pets are obese. Keeping them svelte improves their health and lengthens their lives, just as it does for humans.

My kitties sometimes love a tiny bit of butter, and one likes Greek yogurt. They only get very little (barely enough to lick off my fingertip) and not every morning. They won't touch any other dairy product either.
