Comments (48)Due to a knee injury, I don’t downhill ski any more, but even when I still skied, no one ever did more than one run with me. ;>) I didn’t learn to alpine ski as a kid because I was clutzy and because OH is mostly too flat and too warm, so learning when I was in my mid20s, I never totally got the hang of it. I was a slow skier, though I enjoyed it. So I would go to the ski area with others, but mostly skied on my own. (DH was a beautiful skier having started as a young kid since there was the community ski slope in his back yard, literally. Parents ran the tow. He raced in HS along with the other kids who learned to ski in his back yard.). http://www.nelsap.org/nh/canterbury.html...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape/Gardens - A Photo Thread - April 2021
Comments (60)Defrost - It’s really a shame that life has to get in the way of our gardening. [g] Last year, we changed our mowing habits a little. We started mowing higher on the first cut of the season and staying higher. Normally we’d cut as low as possible in both early spring and fall and not start keeping it long until it gets hot. I thought it made sense to follow that recommendations because the taller grass shades out some of the weeds. I thought it looked better last year. Don’t get me wrong - we leave a lot of ‘weeds’ growing in the lawn and do not use commercial lawn products at all. We have clover, violets and dandelions and a few others. We use all the grass for mulch mixed with fall leaves when we have them and mulch the vegetable garden. I’m always afraid to delay cutting the dandelions because they go to seed so quickly and I don’t notice and then miss my chance before the seeds are flying all over the yard. I am happy to have some dandelion but I don’t want to keep increasing them. [g] I’m doing the same thing with my Blue Holly. It needs a hard pruning but it’s full of flower buds that the bees just love and I’m waiting until that is done to prune it. Dunbarton for a daffodil display - that sounds nice. I’ve always wanted to go to Daffodil Week on Nantucket but have never made it. Too busy using every weekend to get the garden ready every year. That’s a nice idea for a community to focus on adding daffodils. I don’t know of another place, sorry. I don’t have the fiddlehead ferns either. I wonder if New England Wildflower Society has them?...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape/Gardens - A Photo Thread - April 2022
Comments (38)I love creeping phlox and envy my neighbors who have swaths of it draping over walls! I have neither decent phlox nor a wall to drape it over lol. So today I did something I've never done in my gardening life. I went to the garden center and bought some annuals before Mother's Day. I don't usually do this because it's just way too early here. But the last few years one can go first thing in the morning the day after Mother's Day and there is nothing left. I don't know if it's a supply issue or the supposed new hordes of gardeners since the pandemic, or a combination of both. So by the time I usually go, early June, there's definitely nothing left. So I bought a few annuals for my pots, and then got home and tried to figure out how to keep them. This was my solution: The frame contributes nothing lol. It was an old cold frame I dragged out, hoping to start my dahlia tubers early, only to find out after dragging a window from the very back of the garage that the window is too small to cover the frame. So the frame is there till I find another window or decide to move the frame back. But my setup is a plastic bin upside down. Right now I have it propped up on bricks, because the sun IS warm, although the wind is horrifically cold - worked outside in my winter coat and a hat today! Tonight I'll go remove the bricks (or pop them under and inside the bin for some radiant heat. I have a smaller bin all ready to go over that flat of impatiens, with two containers of water for radiant heat as well. I think it's probably overkill - it's supposed to be about 40 degrees tonight - but these babies were in a very warm green house so I don't want them going into shock lol. So hopefully I'll get them through next week and the danger of frost! Also, here's a pic of my Quail daffodils. Love these late little bloomers! :) Dee...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape and Gardens-A Photo Thread - April 2023
Comments (13)PM, thanks for the thorough Daffodil info. I’ve already looked at Colorblends website and am going to place an order for Ice Follies and scilla for sure, other varieties still being decided. You always provide such excellent information! One question for all you daffodil people. If I plant bulbs in the middle of VERY established japanese pachysandra, will it be able to sprout and bloom above it? This pachysandra gets plenty of spring sun before the canopy has developed. The pachysandra would easily disguise the failing foliage. Will it strangle the daffodil bulb? I’ve love to turn that carpet of green into something more interesting. The pachysandra was likely planted 20-30 years ago and it has spread extensively. It’s just too much to try to diminish it, but I am able to pull runners out of some small planting areas dotted amongst the Pachy Ocean. Oooo, you all are getting me excited! Our area will soon have all these blooms. When our Sunday rain is over I’ll take some pics. Things really emerged during the early April heat wave, but we were DRY for close to two weeks, so they halted. Now with some moisture they are emerging, but temps are back down to cool. Today we are supposed to get 2” of rain! I’m sure with May’s warmer days things are about to take off. Regarding the heat wave, I overestimated the moisture in my wintersowing milk jugs and for the first time in several years lost some desired seedlings to dryness, like some good salvia varieities that came with few seeds to begin with, so I won’t have many that either waited to germinate or survived the hot dryness. My pulmonaria is blooming. Sigrid, I am always disappointed to see the lungwort so tiny and straggly when it blooms. The internet pics have such full foliage when it blooms. Mine bloom so soon after emerging that you barely notice it. Does yours ever bloom with full foliage? Anybody else?...See MoreRelated Professionals
