Pygmy Date Winter Protection???
Comments (3)I'm in a zone that changes every few years from 8b to 9a, and one year, I didn't have my greenhouse setup to keep my pygmy palms in for the winter. All but one died, and that was at about 23 degrees. The one that survived lived for 2-3 more years on its own in the ground, dying back to the ground during each winter freeze, but when it hit 18 degrees this year, I think it's safe to say that it isn't going to come back. This freeze got my majesty palm too, after it surviving through several of our winters....See MoreCanary Island Date Palm
Comments (52)CIDP's totally lost all their leaves here in the Napa Valley December 1990 freeze, where temps got down to 14~16F, although most did recover. Generally not recommended for any areas that will regularly get below 20F, and two winters back to back with such cold will severely stress the palm, and probably kill it. Ice storms in combination with such cold can also be a problem for their survival, and even the true Date Palm, P. dactylifera, which is abit cold hardier, can lose all its foliage if it gets frozen rain in combination with 20F temps, as happened here in northern California in valleys north of San Francisco this last January. I think they have mostly stopped planting P. canariensis in Las Vegas because they keep getting killed in bad winter, while the true Date Palms will recover, sometimes surviving temps down to 4F, (but all bets are off if these super cold temps are accompanied by freezing rain). Bottom line, in Dallas, a CIDP should be treated as a plant to enjoy until it freezes some winter, so buyer beware. Also, neither of these palms look their best where summers are hot and humid, they prefer drier air. P. dactylifera also can be abit sickly when planted in too cool coastal conditions of northern California, where they don't get enough summer heat to really thrive....See MoreNew Palms / Over-wintered Palms
Comments (2)Here in zone 9 (Central Florida) we saw low 20's this year and it killed a small potted Saw Palmetto that I had grown from a seed a few years back. It was around 3 yrs old and was close to 1 ft tall. You'll have your hands full with your zone for sure. If mine had been in the ground, it would have survived since I have seen no damage to the wild ones in our area....See MorePygmy date flowering for the first time
Comments (9)tropicalzone, I didn't even think they could flower at this age/size. Upon a closer look, I saw that even the smaller ones in the clumps were flowering. tnwindmill, I'm glad someone else chimed in with some information on growing these indoors in the winter. I've only seen these potted out in patios but there's no need here to drag them in unless we get a severe cold blast. Thanks Topher, this is actually the first summer for my succulent garden. The pygmy dates were planted last spring, and the majority of the succulents were added later on in the summer and the fall (most were cuttings that I stuck in the ground). It's really cool to finally see them start to fill in after spending the whole winter months sitting idle. I was kind of tired of seeing bare ground between young plants. Now that we're getting some heat, they're growing super fast....See More- 6 years ago
