Australian Native Plants

Need help identifying this tree

Hi. My mother and I recently moved into a new house with landscaped gardens. There are plenty of natives in the gardens- heavy on the Acmenas/Syzygiums and Dianellas- so I'm guessing this tree is an Australian native too. The buds look like tiny green figs - you can see buds in the photos. I keep missing the petals before they dry up. Can anyone identify it, please?

Can't see the flowers properly, can to get some close ups? When you say "buds look like tiny green figs", are they flower buds or are they fruits?

They were buds. I'll try to take a close up of the flowers tomorrow.

Where is it? Is it a street planting, or does it does it look like it's come up naturally? If a street planting the local council might know about it. But the more information and photos you can provide here the easier it will be for someone to identify it.

Not convinced it's Japanese Plum. The fruits don't look quite right, nor do the bark/leaves (based on a google search on Japanese Plum). Can you show me some example images? A lot of the immature plums, etc I'm seeing online tend to be narrower at the stem end, and wider at the bottom. This fruit is wider at the top where it is attached to the stem.

It's a Duranta, they grow as a large shrub or small tree.

One of the orange twigged cultivars of Cornus sanguinea that became prevalent on the market awhile back. Since my recollection is that the normal green leaved versions of the same species do not tend to show this same kind of browning in this area I've tended to assume it was sun damage to the yellow parts of the otherwise paler green than typical leaves of these orange twigged forms. Your second picture might also tend to confirm this, as it appears the damage is confined to the yellow portions of the leaves and not the green. Various partly yellow or white horticultural forms of conifers may also do this, with only the palest parts of the foliage being subject to browning by full sun exposure - or perhaps frost in some instances.

I took a piece of it to Bunnings today- a guy there knows his stuff. He thought it was a Syzygium until he had a proper look. It's in a bed with hedging Syzigium. I'm wondering if it was grabbed and planted by mistake.

Location helps to narrow it down. I'm near Darwin, so a bit out of my area. It doesn't have that Syzygium look to me. They're usually referred to as Lillypillies down your way. The ones here are called Bush Apples, the fruits get up to about apple size. Let's hope someone can solve the mystery.

Yeah, it definitely isn't a Syzygium, but it's possible it was grabbed with the half dozen Syzygiums it lives with by mistake back when they were all small plants without flowers or fruit and looked the same. Either way it's coming out and being replaced with a dwarf flowering gum.

I'd say you're right about that. A flowering gum will look nice.

I think that's Cheese tree (Glochidion ferdinandii). Native but can be a bit scrappy looking in the garden

Definately looks like Glochidion. See pic.
