Why is my succulent dying?
Comments (11)Thanks to you both for your comments! It was helpful to know what to look for. I slipped the plant out of its pot, and found that the soil and roots were still damp, even though I haven't watered the plant in quite awhile. Also, I discovered it only has one main "trunk" and all the arms are offshoots. Unfortunately two of the offshoots were completely mushy at the base. I cut them off and also removed any shriveled up or mushy "leaves". (Strange that some leaves were shriveled up as though they had dried up and others were mushy as though they were water-logged and started to rot.) I'm afraid the plant is too far gone already - the main stems leading up to the offshoots are yellowish and although they are still pretty firm, I think the base is rotting a bit. Also, even though I slipped it out of the pot very carefully, nearly half of the rootball stayed in the pot. I didn't even feel it break off, so maybe it was already broken, but either way there aren't a lot of roots left. I'm going to leave it out of the pot overnight to make sure the roots dry out completely, and I left the potting mix spread out on a paper towel to dry thoroughly. It's too bad because it's a lovely plant. I just didn't realize how little water it actually needs. :(...See MoreWhat's on my succulent and why does he lean?
Comments (1)Your plant looks like a sedum. In nature, they serve as groundcover and it is only natural for it to eventually lean. The 'rash' is natural corking, where there has been stress upon the stem. It's the plant's reaction to the leaning and it is strengthening its own stem to deal with it. Perfectly normal and healthy....See MoreWhy are my succulents dying?
Comments (12)Your Magic Red has an additional issue. From the looks of it, it was sold as a "Magic Red" but it was really a Perle von Nurnberg with the blueish white powdery coating washed off. While you were away, new leaves emerged and showed their true appearance. There is an instagram post on the topic....See MoreWhy does my succulent look so sad?
Comments (15)Katelyn, so it sounds like you have recently watered this plant but the leaves are still shrivelled? Couple of other things may be worth considering: could be that the plant has lost it's roots to rot (or a pest), try giving the plant a gentle tug to see if it comes away from the soil. If the plant feels firmly rooted, another possibility is that the roots are situated in a clump of hydrophobic peat which the water is not penetrating. You may need to consider digging the plant up in order to find out exactly what is going on. Andrew...See Moreciaonyc
