Coopers hawk?

Might be a sharp-shinned hawk. A full tail shot would help, but the head and shoulders seem to favor a Sharp-shinned. A Cooper's head looks larger and the shoulders more square.

Thank you. My wife found some images on the web that are closer to these pictures than Sibley's drawings although those images suggested the bird would be more yellow than this one is. Dave

It's tough to tell what this bird is since it is in bad shape and very little of it is viewable. However, I can rule out European Starling based on the length of the tail and pinkness of the bill. Given the location and field marks available (longish, reddish brown tail and what I can see of the bill), I cannot rule out Hermit Thrush. But I'd need to see the underside to tell.

Beautiful bird, unfortunate fate. I've never seen an ovenbird out of a forest. I live in the middle of a suburban area pretty far from any big forests. Unfortunate my only sighting was a dead one out here, though. Don't want him to just rot away but if anything why not let the bugs do their job. I might just move the body to a heavily planted area to let the little ecosystem get to work.

Thanks, Old Forester! I thought #7 was a catbird given the color (and I could hear a few in the park ). I hadn't see a mockingbird this year in DC till this one. #5, 6, 9 were all foraging on the ground and there were several of them in mixed flocks with the mourning doves. The beaks of all three and the colors on 5 - I was hoping they were some kind of grosbeaks. Thanks again!

This is actually a clear cut adult Cooper's Hawk. Dark "capped" appearance to head, and grayish cheek that does not occur on the similar Sharp-shinned. Also build of the bird is long and tubular.
