Wow! Your garden looks wonderful, Ingrid. I'm celebrating your cooler temps! Your plants look really fresh and lush. It's amazing what a difference irrigation can make. I've got to get those soaker hoses installed this fall! I'm thinking Wild Edric might grow well here, too. Rugosas are generally happy in Portland. The mauve blooms on your specimen are positively delicious! If reports of WIld E in my area are good, it may be one of the few roses that flourishes in both of our oh-so-different climates. Carol

I am so hoping I can get a sea lavender to bloom here. I have another one going from seed, but no bloom yet. Your garden is really an inspiration, Ingrid. I really admire you carrying on, in spite of climate change, with your eyes open. Your touches of yellow add a special something too. I'm sure your froggie loves it too. I think your Tea Mlle de Sombreuil is especially beautiful here.

Carol, your comment about 'Wild Edric' makes me wonder... are there conditions that Rugosas don't adapt to well? I don't grow any (yet), but kinda figured that they generally are not prima donna sorts, and will do well in most gardens, but I haven't really questioned this assumption...

Perhaps there are gardens where they will be doomed? Of course, I'd guess that certain hybrids are probably more adaptable than others...

Just saw your comment, Virginia. Rugosas live but don't really do very well here - they tend to get rusty and a bit rough looking, IIRC. I really don't think they like hot and dry, their home territory being cool/temperate and humid, I suppose.

Virginia, as it happens, I've been reading Liz Druitt's "The Organic Rose Garden" lately. Like comtesse said, she talks about how hybrid rugosas don't thrive in the South as well as they do in the North... for all the reasons that comtesse mentions and they like sandy soil as well. She mentions a few exceptions only: Mary Manners, Sarah Fleet, R. rugosa rubra (which seems to be one of her absolute favorites), and 'Hansa'. A few more were included in her selection of 100 roses (mostly for the South) if you are interested.

Wild Edric is a rose that Austin hybridized, and therefore I'm not sure that it's pure rugosa, although it certainly looks it. Unfortunately, Austin quickly discontinued this rose, saying it was not "suitable", whatever that means. In my garden, the specimen that gets almost no afternoon sun is doing best, and the two others that do have afternoon sun aren't faring nearly as well after the hot spell we had. They get rust in the spring but get over it in summer. They seem to tolerate hot and dry conditions in my garden, probably because they get plenty of water, and as mentioned do much better without afternoon sun.

Thank you all for the lovely complements. I knocked off the dead leaves that were everywhere after our hot spell, so you might say the pictures are "cosmetically enhanced".

Lisa, the reason my garden looks somewhat tidy is because I have very few companion plants in my meager soil, whereas they probably love your clay soil, so there just isn't much that can get messy. Since you also have grass I imagine that gets into your plants also. Gardens that have quite a few different companion plants are more interesting since they provide different colors and shapes, but almost everything I tried out in the beginning gave up, one after the other, and at this point I just don't have the will to try again.

comtesse, I'm sorry the lovely Mme. de Sombreuil is not available to you. It is a very worthy white tea rose, of which there are not that many. I hope you're keeping well; I think of you often.

Mlle de Sombreuil is listed as being for sale by Kurinda Nursery in Victoria, and it's likely that an Aussie foundling, "Carlsruhe Cemetery Maria Bruhn" is actually the same rose, although it isn't listed as being in commerce.

vesfl, my memory isn't always reliable, but I seem to recall that Malcolm Manners grows a few rugosa hybrids in Florida?

Of couse, rugosas have been hybridized with all kinds of roses, and it may be that the ones crossed with OGR's might not do as well in warm climate gardens as those crossed with Teas or other more heat-tolerant types? OTOH, I think the species has naturalized along northeastern US beaches, which would require some heat tolerance. Many parts of Japan have hot summers also, but I don't know if rugosas are native to the southern islands of Japan, or just the ones further north...

I have sandy loam here- that would probably suit a rugosa or two, though perhaps not all of them. One hybrid I've heard mentioned as being suitable for the south is 'Belle Poitevine'... is that a cultivar mentioned in your book?

Ingrid, David Austin doesn't usually give out the parentages of his roses, and this is no exception, but 'Wild Edric' certainly seems unfazed by your hot and dry garden conditions...

Virginia, unfortunately I'm not as much familiar with M. Manners' roses, but I looked up other h. rugosas that Druitt lists in her book: Basye’s Purple, Blanc Double de Coubert, Frau Dagmar Hartopp, Jens Munk, Linda Campbell, Star Delight, Thérèse Bugnet, Topaz Jewel. She and Mike Shoup started the Antique Rose Emporium and also co-authored a book on landscaping with roses. Though 'Belle Poitevine' is not included in her book, I've just looked at the photos and she is beautiful, surely worth considering to grow.

I'm mystified why DA decides to discontinue some of his roses that are doing so well and look quite charming. Had it not been for Ingrid's 'Wild Edric', I would have never known this lovely rose.

Is it true that the Rugosa's really prefer acidic conditions? I think I read that somewhere. Wild Edric must indeed have enough other genes in its make up to overcome this. Wild Edric is clearly happy at Ingrid's place, and our soil and water is alkaline here. I guess we won't ever know what else is in Wild Edric's make up, since DA is so illusive about his breeding. Really? Seedling x Seedling. What's the harm in revealing a bit more? As if we could all go "breed up" that exact rose ourselves with the information. It would just make it easier to select which of his roses might be most suitable for our individual climates and gardens. Other breeders aren't so secretive. If I didn't love some of his (DA's), roses so much I would refuse to buy any of them. That's just me, though. And the issue goes FAR deeper than not revealing lineage. Its the Rose Mosaic virus, the high prices, and the way that company discontinues roses and then has found a way to make it hard for nurseries to sell the out of patent roses and the ones that they've discontinued. As I understand it, if a nursery propagates and sells the older, discontinued DA roses, DA won't let them sell the new DA's. I find it very crafty of them to create this little catch 22.

Sorry about my little rant, especially to Ingrid as this is her post. I'll step off my podium now, and say DA breeds some gorgeous roses. I do grow quite a few of them, and I love them. The company practices and policies, not so much. That's an understatement.

Ingrid has so generously offered me one of her three Wild Edrics, once our weather cools enough for transplanting. I'm first to admit, that I'm not above turning her down because of my frustration with David Austin Inc. I am absolutely thrilled to be receiving this rose that I wouldn't be able to acquire otherwise. It will receive a prime spot, with its roots protected inside of a gopher cage. If I ever learn to successfully root cuttings, when Wild Edric is out of patent, I'll make more. Then I'll happily give them away. I won't make a dime, but then neither will David Austin:) Lisa

I wonder if a rose that has been discontinued by Austin would still be under patent. I don't know of any nursery that carries it, which makes it even more frustrating. Given that, I don't know that I'd have any qualms about rooting a cutting, except that I'm supremely bad at it. Lisa, maybe you'll have better luck.

Lisa, I might have bought this ten years ago and for a while I kept the labels, but I'm afraid they're long gone. I might be wrong, but I thought patents ran out after 17 years on roses. When a rose is no longer in commerce I feel pretty sure it's safe to take cuttings since the cuttings are not in competition with the same rose being sold commercially.

Thank you for the kind words. Sheila, I'm housebound so much, and for the last year I've even worked from home, that I have a lot more time than most people to take pictures. It's one of the few things I can do that doesn't wipe me out.

What a bummer. I took the flowers and leaves from Mrs. B.R. Cant and the mystery rose I showed above and my husband and I agree they are the same. I'm taking out my old Mrs. B.R. Cant because I dislike the red color that it shows in my climate and now I'm stuck with another one! That makes one ugly orange mini instead of Spice, an unknown climber instead of Marie van Houtte, a single red rose instead of Mrs. Henry Morse, Mrs. B.R. Cant instead of Thriomphe de Luxembourg, a dead rose instead of Mlle. de Sombreuil, and another Mme. Lambard instead or Souvenir de Jules Gravereaux. My cup runneth over! The good news is that four of them will be replaced by Snowbird, Mlle. Franziska Krueger, La France and Florence Bowers. I will learn to love the new Mrs. B.R. Cant. If it were a runty plant I could justify replacing it, but no, of course it's doing wonderfully well. On the other hand when I think of what people went and are going through with hurricanes and flooding I will just keep my mouth shut.

It is possible that Austin didn't file for a plant patent for 'Wild Edric' AKA Aushedge. There is no info under 'patents' at HMF, whereas patent information IS given for 'Wild Eve'. I don't know if HMF lists patents for every rose that has been granted a plant patent, so this omission is suspicious, but not definitive.

Also, once a year had passed after 'Wild Edric' was publicly acknowledged, it would have been too late to file a patent. If DA was late deciding whether to patent, they could have run out of time to do so.

Ingrid, I wonder if the flower color of 'new MBRC' might be more to your liking if the plant got more shade than 'old MBRC'? Not sure if that's even possible, but MBRC is known to be shade tolerant, and in your conditions that tolerance might become more of a preference...

Virginia, thank you for that very interesting patent information about Wild Edric. I would love to know why this rose was considered unworthy so early on after its introduction, and that other vendors who do offer Austin roses also don't have it. I wonder whether it was considered to be too similar to other purplish-red rugosas.

Alas, shade is hard to come by here, only a small area against the house, which is already planted, and of course the Mrs. is a rather large lady. My new one already has larger flowers than the old one in spite of it being a very young plant and has been given a much better start, so I think it may not turn out too badly after all.
