What would be the point of a fan that high up?

Some ceiling fans have downrods and can be quite a bit lower than the ceiling.

Looks like these can drop 70 inches (nearly six feet)

I prefer the silver, but be aware both are dark wood and will visually lower the ceiling.

I would want it white to disappear as much as possible into the ceiling. Also make sure that the blades won't create a strobe light effect with any of the recessed lights.

@jck910 Presumably keeping some of the heat near the ground in winter?

The fan will be dropped 3' and at 70" it's quite large. This room NEEDS a fan. It gets super hot, even with A/C. Do you think a different style would work better?

I originally liked the "big ass fans" line, but they were $$$$ This fan is $700. I didn't really want to go over that.

I like both fans, but I'd consider two 60" fans for your space.

Look at the 72" Fanimation Slinger at Lowes for $300. I have 2 -- work nicely and get compliments from nearly every guest.

We have Minka Java. Bit less expensive. More modern. Good fan.

We just added on a great room about 450 sq ft. Husband is an HVAC man -- he had them install 2 60" fans for the best circulation benefits

you have dark/black accents, so i would go dark. good idea about using 2 fans, your room looks large enough to handle both and u will get better circulation with 2.

flopsycat1 - do you know if the Minka Aire Aviation comes larger than 60"? We just had the carpet ripped up and hardwood installed. LOVE how it looks and now I'm thinking a lighter looking, all silver, fan might work best.

If you are keeping what looks like a gold mirror over the fireplace, I would not want silver. I agree with the poster who suggested white fans.

nimackay- The Aviation is only available in 60". Plenty big enough for our room. Minka Aire has other models in 72", but we really like the sculptural design of the Aviation. Post pics of your room with new hardwood floors!

Seriously, look at the placement of the fan and the lights and consider the potential strobe effect. When we moved into this house, out family room had a fan with no light and 5 recessed cans. We could only use the lights in the (short TX) winter when the fan wasn't used or we would get such a strobe effect on the lights that I couldn't stand to be in the room. We put in a fan with a light and then could use one or the other, but light was limited. We wound up with a dual motor vertical fan like this one. That one is discontinued, but you have the ceiling to do something similar if needed.

If a big horizontal fan will work without strobing, I normally would like the lighter finish to tend to fade into the ceiling, but for me, the dark center fades into the wood while the silver draws attention. I would probably go darker on this one.

I think white to blend into the ceiling.
