Pressure Canning! Get me started.... (Returning under a new id..
Comments (11)Serena - if it has what you called the "old popoff thing" on top then it is an old petcock canner and is not safe. They have not been considered safe for many years despite what the store guy said. These are the canners that blew up in the good old days and if you review the recent discussion linked below you'll find more discussion on them. Before you use it, please do get it replaced with a modern pressure relief valve, if that is even possible on that model, for your safety or don't use this canner. Mirromatic is the vintage name for Mirro and modern Mirro canners, perfectly safe, are very different from the old Mirromatic ones. I cant remember the size but its a larger one. To be used for pressure canning, it MUST hold a minimum of 4 quart jars. Any smaller and it can't be used for canning, only for pressure cooking. NCHFP (the link Deanna provided for you) is the recognized authority for all current guidelines and safe home canning rules and regs. There are many other disreputable sites out there advocating unsafe practices but NCHFP is the site we here will always cite as the only legit source. Explore it in detail for all sorts of safety guidelines. Home food preservation is fun and cost-effective and incorporates convenience to a degree as well, but it is SAFETY that is the first rule. Comments (9)It is amazing how much flexibility we lose as we get older. I am shocked over here! lol Yoga is something I'd really like to try. As far as the aches and pains, diet can also help there. J. J. Virgin is a new one appearing on the PBS circuit. It's the same type of program others are promoting about dropping certain foods and increasing vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds. Let's see if I can remember them from her program to eliminate food sensitivities and inflammation. Dairy Gluten Eggs Soy Corn Sugar & artificial sweeteners Peanuts (had to look that one up!) Dr. Fuhrman promotes GOMBS Greens Onions Mushrooms Beans & Berries Seeds & Nuts for energy and disease prevention and even reversal. These doctors (others too) are really hitting the circuit that we don't have to get sick or feel tired and achy. We are what we eat! One thing JJV said that stuck with me was "our bodies are not bank accounts, they are labs". That's basically the premise of Dr. Furhman's educationals, too. MRIs use magnets not radiation, there should be no issue with exposing that area. Yes they cost a lot of money, if you're shoulder becomes useless it may be necessary, but that is up to a doctor to decide. I will never understand why if you have a health problem you would discuss it on a discussions side of a decorating forum and get other people's opinions or experiences rather than see a specialist. Wow. That's a pretty curt and judgemental response but that's just my opinion. Because what I glean from that response is that anyone that would ask about a medical issue on a forum is an idiot. Seems to be par for the course around here much too much, again...just my opinion and one of the reasons I lurk more than post. I will say that the overwhelming majority of posts here are polite and friendly - I enjoy reading those. People frequent forums because they like to ask questions, read about the experiences of others, share their experiences, get helpful information, and, sometimes, just have a simple conversation on the discussions or off topic section of a decorating, car, garden, or whatever forum. ~Back on topic~ To answer Oakley's OP, I do have experience with mild to severe pain in every joint in my body but no distinct problems with my shoulders. I just live with it. Sometimes, I have really bad days but can still function. It started happening around 10 years ago and got to the point a few years later where I had to take one stair at a time (still happens from time to time). I don't go to the Doctor for every little thing but decided to go to an Orthopedic Surgeon and get the whole work-up. Diagnosis: Age - exactly what I thought Treatment: Joint specific exercises and OTC pain relief. I just ordered this supplement from Dr. Mercola. He's a proponent of natural health as well as a Physician, Surgeon, and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He's a frequent guest on Dr. Oz's show and always interesting. Anyway, read about it, might be worth a try. Dr. Mercola on Dr. Oz Astaxanthin on Mercola.com Hope your shoulder feels better, Oakley....See MoreHave you ever had Massage Therapy or......
Comments (11)I have had accupuncture on and off for the past 20 years. I've used it to treat migraines, vertigo and abdominal issues. All I can say is that it works for me when all other avenues have failed. My accupuncture therapist has also taught me how to do accupressure on myself. I can clear my sinuses within 5 minutes of pressing on pressure points. I have also used accupuncture on my dog who had severe arthritis. The tricky part was keeping a 95 lb. lab still while the needles and electrodes did their work. Mind you this did not happen in one appointment. It probably took 2 weeks before we saw slight improvement and then 3 months before he was off his meds and walking without a limp. I had wondered about the mind/body connection with my own therapy, such as the placebo effect, but when I saw how it helped my dog who had no idea why he was there and what this was supposed be doing for him, did I realize the true healing properties of accupuncture....See More- 9 years ago
