Porches & Decks Design Dilemma Exterior

2nd pic-this porch is what i want. only flipped (the perg on the other side). Possibley raised up where the perg trusses will be above the roofline-not touching of course. I am not too sure on the arch over the door. My house is smaller so that might be a bit much. The 1st pic is my house-it is an old pic. Ill post a newer one on here soon.

Newer pic of house. I am also trying to decide...do i want to go across the front of the entire house with the porch or just a foot past 1st window. Then put a flower bed or something in the remaining corner.

Hello, Building a nice screen room with tapered round columns is a bit time consuming but can be done. I've done a few on some historic homes. What I do is is align a piece of either 5/4 or 1 x along side the tapered column. I then hand scribe it vertically plumb, cut it so that it butts tightly against the column with its' slopes. The end result is a vertically plumb 1x or 5/4 jamb to create a square box in between the tapered columns to accomadate the new screen panels. Normally all the tapered columns are the same. So once you make one attachment piece to a column, you ccan copy them for all the rrest. Now you have a square opening to calculate your screen panels that would be installed in between. I make my own cedar screen frames and run screen spline tracks on the table saw. Of course I prefinish all the pieces and parts before assembly. Thanks, Benje. I really appreciate the time and thought you've put into this--very generous of you. I like your ideas. I guess the biggest difference with this is that we lose the fourth bedroom/office. When we bought the house, we planned on one kid, but--twins! My office is currently the small bedroom, and they share a room, but we'd really like to give them their own space. So our plan helped us get there (without losing my office). dropping the window down could well be odd on the inside. i'd leave it alone for now. get the outside work done. it may be a non event with so many new things to look at on the outside. how about just adding larger trim to the top of the door?

I repeat: Your house structure does not allow for what you invision. This means completely stripping off the facade and adding a whole new addition to the front. Meaning: $$. Will you recoupe this costly upgrade? I doubt it. Seek the advice of an architect and call the bank. Best of luck.

I like the idea of going past the 1st window and leaving the last window and right corner open for landscaping. Do you have electrical available for lights on either side of your door? Moving your mailbox to the other side or hanging one on the house would help as would having your roof power washed.

You don't like my roof huh? Power washing a roof is advisable? I would think the pressured water might get up under the shingles-tell me what you know about that practice plz. GTK on the layout and yes i have power run to the door. Did it back when I rewired the front of the house.

I was also looking for any design input on the covered area above the door. The idea picture is too big for what I have to work with. I'm not sure if I just need to shorten the arch (width) or maybe with a different design all together. All I know is I want the area above the door to be solid and the rest a perg.

My son did it for a living for years. Someone who does it for a living knows the correct pressure to use and does it from the top down. My sister did it to her roof and it made a huge difference in the appearance.

The picture of the pergola you show looks as though it's attached to the header-probably with bolts and joist hangers. I think you could do the same thing but you have to take proportion into account. You could do something straight across with no arch as well with a roof only over the door. You would have to angle it enough for snow and rain to slide off though.
