Design of porch screening system if porch has round columns

We want to enclose a recently widened wooden porch with a balustraded railing. The porch is segmented by round columns that taper on both the top and bottom with a receding pediment. These columns pose a problem in trying to assemble a taut screening system that looks attractive and serves its purpose, namely to protect us from the millions of mosquitoes that have invaded our region. We don't want to use the Screentight system, which is horribly unattractive and wouldn't pass muster with the historic committees. Our contractor wants to use a 1 inch thick by 3 inches wide board to compensate for the receding circumference of the column and saw a groove into which the screen would be pushed and then a spleen placed to secure the screen. Does anyone have any comments about this method or do you know of another method that would work? Thanks.
