Need advice about adding covered back porch
Comments (15)We just added a screened-in porch off the back of our small house, which faces south. We added this as we were in the process of a remodel that opened up the back with lots of light... so I was pretty nervous about how it might feel with a roof limiting some of that light. Especially because we have only 8ft ceilings. It definitely reduces the bright sun but it still feels like we have plenty of light. The white roof and pillars help, as for the 3 skylights that are placed parallel with the doors. I would have loved a pergola both to preserve the light and because they’re charming, but in our area the bugs are too miserable to get much use out of an unscreened patio. This is the best before and after I can show - It’s definitely not gloomy but the bright spotlight of sun through each door is reduced....See MoreDesign dilemma- front porch add on
Comments (9)What a charming location — except for the view of the neighbors. I would be more concerned with screening my view of them than how the house looked to other people. Take away the railings and add a pergola, Eztend a large garden well into the lawn. Plant tall flowers (I’d even grow some vegetables like sweet peas!) and layer in some trellies for flowering vines. Create a kind of room out there, one that is mainly open, both in the open ”walls” and a very airy pergola-roof. On the other side of the house do a window box, or a wide 3-tier planter under the window. Get shutters that are actually functional....See MoreDesign dilemma - Porch styling fo self build house
Comments (9)That house isn't designed with a porch, or designed to have a porch. You are self building, and can't see that? Start with a different designer. And a different builder. FYI, get rid of al of those hip roofs, and bumpety bump outs, and maybe you can have a form that will allow a porch to attach and look good. But not on that design. FYI 2, a masonry clad home is not a good choice for a self build. Neither is stucco....See MoreDesign Dilemma - Paint Color/Scheme Options for Back Entryway
Comments (7)It’s a busy little area so I’d aim to make it feel less broken up/larger. If your kitchen is a dark blue/grey, suggest using the same undertone but in a mid range shade - light enough to brighten, but dark enough to hide scuffs. I’d paint the trim, baseboards and back door the same color. To avoid wear and tear on the floor, but also to make hallway fun, consider a vinyl runner. https://www.vmathome.com/collections/best-sellers?page=2 Add some prints and you’re done. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1146145088/sailboat-prints-set-vintage-nautical?epik=dj0yJnU9ZGhZSEJnLV9pYW9BSGxxM19QRmN6WkRIQnVNcUh5a2kmcD0wJm49V3lKM3RRUmVKZC1VRGtkcE5LTXl6ZyZ0PUFBQUFBR1RkSExB...See Moretoddinmn
