Yes it will darken the room. Consider a retractable awning instead.

There are ways to have a glass roof to let in light .

The builder would attach to side of house with support posts to ground. We are rebuilding the deck. Size will be 15 x 36 with the covered portion 16 x 20. But no sides and open. It’s east facing. Like this photo but with lower level patio and walk out.

Well, that looks like a plan if you are prepared to lose the light in the living room. Why even ask the forum?

I was wondering if there were any insights regarding east facing, sun direction, overall depth and light from kitchen windows. It would reduce glare from the sun into the room but I don’t want it to be gloomy. I could consider a pergola too. Just looking for opinions from others who may have experience with something similar. Thank you.

A pergola won't help in the rain. A roof will darken the room.

Rethink the retractable awning. An awning is a nice way to add covering for a porch.

I had a 25’ long great room with 12’ ceilings. The ends had identical double floor to ceiling sliding doors. At the south end outside the doors was an 8’ deep covered porch with open sides. In the daytime, the end with the porch needed the lights on inside to read even though it was south facing. I could read at the north end with no lights on.

Light can bend, but not at right angles. Even the open sides won't help counteract such a large roofed area. There's no question you'll change the character of that room completely. The real question is whether you value indoor natural light more than the new outdoor living space.

Amended to add: 3D rendering software is so good now, an architect could measure and mock up your home to give you a much better idea of how the new porch would affect the view from inside the family room. Still not real life, but better than the imagination, so it might be worth the extra cost in the end.

One idea is to add the covered porch over just one of the slider doors with transom in the family room. This would create a 14’ x 15’ covered area and a 22’ x 15’ sun deck. The other door and kitchen window would get full light. Thoughts?

We just added a screened-in porch off the back of our small house, which faces south. We added this as we were in the process of a remodel that opened up the back with lots of light... so I was pretty nervous about how it might feel with a roof limiting some of that light. Especially because we have only 8ft ceilings. It definitely reduces the bright sun but it still feels like we have plenty of light. The white roof and pillars help, as for the 3 skylights that are placed parallel with the doors. I would have loved a pergola both to preserve the light and because they’re charming, but in our area the bugs are too miserable to get much use out of an unscreened patio. This is the best before and after I can show - It’s definitely not gloomy but the bright spotlight of sun through each door is reduced.

Skylights can be added to the porch roof.

It will darken your room. I had an 8'deep lanai, 22' wide, 10' ceilings, and my interior room was darker. Now, my lanai was enclosed on the sides, just the long side was open so a slightly different situation.

I agree with ratherbesewing that skylights in the porch roof will help ameliorate the lighting issue.
