Hiring help for household chores ?
Comments (9)I've had help once a week for several years now. It's not because I CAN'T do it, but because I'd rather be doing something else. Plus there's the Hubby factor. He just doesn't see dirt. Me, I can't stand a dirty house. I can stand a little clutter, but not a dirty house. After constant arguing about it, we decided the solution was to have someone clean the house. That was about 10 years ago, and we haven't had an argument about it since. With my first cleaning lady, I sat down with my list of everything I wanted her to do, and she gave me her price. Over the next few months, she added a few things I had missed, and we were so pleased with her work, we gave her a raise. We were sorely disappointed when she and her husband moved away, but she referred us to a friend of hers who also cleaned houses for a living, and this woman has been so wonderful. I am positive she cleans BETTER than I would, and she's done in about 4 hours. She's also very kind and responsible. She now cleans for my mother-in-law, who is 79, and will call me if she thinks there is a problem. She will check the house if we're away, and one time, when she checked in the middle of winter, the furnace had died. Her husband came over and tried to get it going, and when he couldn't, the two of them stayed there, keeping our fireplace going, until the furnace people could come and fix everything. There have even been days when she has swung by on her way to another job just to let my dog out. She's just a saint and I'd trust her with anything. I'm just grateful that she's quite a bit YOUNGER than I am, because I'd hate to have to replace her any time soon! I guess the main point of this post is to encourage you to go ahead, as it can be such a wonderful experience, and to see if you can find a reference from someone for your worker. If you use something like "The Maids", be sure to check their references too. And write down everything you want done. I'm sure you will find that, after being relieved of those chores, there will be more you will want to let go of as well. As for me, I am still doing the "everyday" stuff. Hubby still leaves dishes all over the house, crumbs all over the counter, food out everywhere, etc. He still thinks you can go a whole week without sweeping the kitchen floor or wiping out the kitchen sink. Sigh! Well, I've trained him as best I could. But the thing is, I know that one day per week, my home will be pristine, and all I have to do from there is "keep it up". It makes a HUGE difference, and I'm not crabbing at hubby for all the little habits I know will never change. MacThayer...See MoreWhat do you do when you hate your daughter's haircut?
Comments (29)I remember when the afro was popular and I asked my Mom if I could have one and she said no. I was in the 7th grade and thought how mean. Well when I was a freshman(14) in high school, I asked again and she told me that I could do it IF I was responsible about it and kept it neat and always looked presentable. I remember it as one of my first big decisions and I was so proud of the fact that she had enough faith in me that I would do the right thing and I did. Fast forward a gazillion years later and my D son asked if he could grow his hair out so that he could wear it braided. At the time he was 14 and I remembered the encounters with my Mom and I said the same thing to him. My hubby immediately said no and we had a family meeting and we made it clear that if he didn't take care of his hair AND save up the money to pay for getting it braided himself, then it would be cut off. Well my son is now almost 22 with hair below his shoulders and he is very responsible about taking care of his hair. Actually he is almost obsessed about it :-) That was one of the first real mature decisions for him, just like it was for me. I think depending on the maturity level of the kid, 14 is not too young to start experimenting with hair. As long as it is made clear to the kid what the potential ramifications are, then I think it is fine. I think we as adults have to remember what it is like to be that age and struggle with individuality vs what's popular and how hard it can be for teenagers. It is just hair and it will grow back. I have had every imaginable hairstyle under the sun, afro, long, short, asymmetrical, mullet and braids. Each style represented me during a particular period and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to do different things. We have to support, be honest but let them discover who they are. Oh yeah one other thing, as soon as my son started growing facial hair, he loved it and I hated it. He would let it grow long and I would beg for him to please shave and my hubby gently reminded ME about letting him express his individuality :-) To me he looked like Grizzly Adams but to my son it made him look older. Ughh.... So the running joke between us was that I would call him Grizzly but if he wanted to look like a mountaim man, that was his choice. Again fast forward a few years and he has a very nice goatee that is now well manicured and he looks great. I remembered my own experience and let him be and he eventually grew out of the Grizzly Adams look. Thank goodness!...See MoreHousehold chores we enjoy
Comments (59)My sister with a front loading machine said she finds socks in the front gasket area. My other sister, who was using a laundrymat for a few weeks, said she would find other people’s socks in the same area. Everyone with missing socks, check around the gasket. I wash my socks in a lingerie bag so if they go missing it will be all of them, not just one. I dislike matching my husband’s socks because they are all the same brand and style and yet they all seem to be slightly different lengths. It’s his job to match his socks. I like ironing my own stuff. My husband’s tall shirts have too much fabric and take too long so those go to the dry cleaner. I don’t mind doing laundry but I wouldn’t say I enjoy it. I like grocery shopping but I get grumpy hauling the bags in the house and putting the stuff away. I would outsource that part of the task if I could. I enjoy cooking but not the clean up. As soon as I put my hands in warm, soapy water my nose runs. It is so annoying! There are always a few things that can’t go in the dishwasher so there is always warm, soapy water. My husband does most of the clean up but sometimes it has to be me, with an itchy nose and wet hands....See MoreIf you had one robot to do one chore, what would it be?
Comments (49)Isn't "spring cleaning" one chore? I guess washing windows - mine aren't hard to access, but there is always grunge - from dead leaves and dirt - collected in the nooks and channels of the vinyl frames (why oh why did did they make them like that?) which can be very time consuming, and sometimes difficult, to clean out. With a robot I could have the windows cleaned as often as needed, along with spring and late fall. And I would have more time to fritter away doing whatever non-productive thing it is that I do all morning....See MoreElizabeth
