insect resist ways?? Don't want to kill any insects!
Comments (11)Not really. I appreciate you don't want to kill one living thing in favor of the survival of another living thing. The unfortunate truth is that there are lots of things out there that have no moral qualms about killing and even eating the living things we care most about. Wild animals usually seeks the young, old or sick to take down and that means if we are in nature with our young kids, a predatory animal will target our kids before it will us. Seems sick and perverse, but it's the way nature works. If you want to grow a plant and something other than you wants to eat it you need to decide between your wants and the wants of the thing that wishes to eat your plant. Sure, you could use a copper strip which slugs won't cross to protect your plants, but copper is toxic to many life forms such as fungi and bacteria. Are those life forms also equal in your eyes? If so then it can't be used. If you absolutely cannot kill anything then your best bet is to plant as much as you can. Just maybe after nature's ammoral critters are done eating the fruits of your labor there will be something left for you....See MoreAny fruit you don't want to grow?
Comments (37)Bradybb: sorry but we do not grow A. alnifolia where I work. I cannot comment on any alnifolias except Regent since we do carry it but do not grow it ourselves. Just an FYI to everyone that running serviceberry only grows about 4' tall but suckers like crazy creating a solid stand of serviceberry. Great flavor to the fruit. This species is hard to find and I do not know of anyone growing it commercially for fruit. Usually any commercial places I hear about grow one of the alnifolia types so popular on the prairie states of Canada. My favorite grandiflora types to eat are 'Cole Select' and 'Autumn Brilliance' although all the selections and even plain grandiflora species are quite tasty. A local lady came to the nursery I am at one year and asked if she could pick the serviceberry fruit on the young trees in the field. She made jelly and won a ribbon at the local county fair with it. The local newspaper had a big article on it. She did this for several years. I do plan to try my hand at serviceberry jelly if we have a good fruit crop this year. I have read that the seeds can be poisonous if too many are ingested. Strange as I eat more than my share of serviceberry fruits when in season and never had an issue. I did find that eating too many fresh had quite a laxative affect....See MoreRain, Rain, Go away. I want to go out and play
Comments (4)I took advantage of the great weather today. It is a bit breezy and not as warm as yesterday but I opened up any milk jug that had sprouts so they could "harden up" and I took some of the ones that had just a few seedlings showing and transplanted them into 4 in. nursery pots. I've gathered what I have left to plant out and if temperatures drop tonight, I'll put them in the garage and bring them back out tomorrow. We have had so much rain that so many of them look so spindley. I pinched the blue flax back and that about killed me to do that. If weather is again nice like 60 and above, I'll work on planting some more out tomorrow. Can the wintersown seedlings survive 44-47 degrees?...See MoreOT: POTD: Sometimes we don't get what we want
Comments (8)Tally IS my name, it's my real name, not short for anything, not a nickname. I sign Tally HO! cause it's easy to remember. I do love this plant. It blooms twice a year for us. And it smells great. Planted one in my moms yard also. We're about 10-15 degrees colder than usual this year. There has been ICE in the dog bowl on the back deck TWICE this year! HORRORS! We call each other if we have ice it's such a rare event. And twice in one year!! Ick! I'm a big weenie when it comes to temps, I'll take 100 hot and humid anyday over cold. Tally HO!...See MoreVicissitudezz
