Paint or refinishing MCM wood tongue and groove wall ideas
Comments (32)Solid wood paneling is a classic, very valuable and cannot be replaced. I'd do something to keep that. I agree that the original aesthetic of the wood was to add warmth with all the natural hard materials like stone, slate, iron, etc. Depends on how much of a purist you want to be with the aesthetic. The original design is flexible as to what colors and stains would work. You could paint too. The only real crime would be to tear out something that is as valuable as real wood paneling. It was even expensive back in the day when it was installed. It has value because it is high quality and beautiful. I would seek to do something that retains the pluses. If you want to maintain your house as an homage to the middle of the last century, then obviously "restore" rather than "redo." Oh, and just a ponder, is that two story fireplace material original? Or was it originally brick too? Love your house BTW! Very elegant....See MoreNeed rug help with MCM bedroom...

I think if the pile height is important to you that you might look at that as well with any of the area rugs. https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Hand-Tufted-Country-Wool-Rug-8-x-10/11118673/product.html?recset=e795447a-fe2f-44cc-b667-eadc5a12880e&refccid=LI52NHO4F7HYYNSPKOKRY62XIE&recalg=872,873,839&recidx=3&refinement=style:Contemporary Was there any particular rug in the original post you liked.... these are the ones I have in a folder.........See MoreWant a modern living room, dining room; layout ideas needed
Comments (27)Agree with lynartist get someone knowledgeable in to look at the walls. Shifting the color used makes a huge difference. I would not have the walls smoothed or made shiny. But there are all sorts of ways to approach this and end up with a great looking home. Consider moving the functions of the two spaces. A modern dining area with a fireplace, even such an ornate one, could be spectacular and marry well with a more intimate USED space for conversations, drinks, and even just solo book readin'! Making the switch would also de-emphasize the fireplace and allow it to look its very best. A bit of a paradox but look at many old European houses and you'll see it again and again. My other preference would be to have a wood refinisher take down the shine on the floor. Congratulations and I hope you let us know how this progresses....See MoreWall Paint Color Recommendation for MCM Inspired Living Room
Comments (30)@Flo Mangan - thanks again for all your input! Evergreen Fog is actually the kitchen wall color, and while it looks bad (IMO) against the black marble backsplash/countertop and white cabinets, it looks quite nice against the warm wood floors (unfortunately not pictured above). I also like the rug that you linked (and mood board) and agree that the rug that we just took delivery of is quite safe and boring. Just to make sure I understand, are you thinking that the large TV could be an accent (Evergreen Fog or otherwise), and the rest would be a soft/warm white? [EDIT!! The kitchen might be BM's October Mist.... can't quite remember] @beeboo22 and @mxk3 z5b_MI - thanks for the kind words! @cat_ky - can't say I disagree at all. We might keep this rug and move it into a bedroom, and then get a proper MCMish rug for the space. @housegal200 - the fireplace is...um...something. I have a love/hate with it, but I feel like it's sort of the heart of the house and wouldn't remove it. Maybe one day reface it though. It's already been retrofit (by a preivous owner) to accomodate a wood stove, and I'll most likely get a modern looking woodstove installed. @Sabrina Alfin - I dig the first pic quite a bit. Yeah the drapes are really weird, and I like the idea of individual shades (or some alternative), but the 4 outside windows that open have a crank that opens them, which would get in the way of any shade, and I wouldn't want to have the windows without any some kind of treatment, for privacy and security reasons. @JP L - don't worry, these windows aren't going anywhere! They're super unique (and custom) and I wouldn't replace them unless I had to for some reason. Interesting comment on the ceilings. So I know that a previous owner did tons of DIY work in this house, and the house has a super massive attic space and is essentially 1 floor. It's certainly possible that they drywalled some preexisting ceiling to add can lights. I'm a bit scared to "peel things back" and take a look... we spent a lot of time and money remediating a bunch of issues in this house that stemmed from funky DIY work and general lack of maintenance. Would be pretty damn cool if there's some amazing ceiling just hiding underneath the awful drywal/texture job that was done. And thanks for the kind words about the house. It's been a hell of a ride and challenge so far, but I'm digging it....See MoreMira C
