Comments (11)Hi Earl, I know your trying to help but.... "Not meaning to be sarcastic, but why do people start pulling codes on electronics when it's something stupid like the darned prong at the tranny? A flickering of on and off is poor connection." Pulling codes and performing the diagnostics correctly is EXACTLY how this should be approached. Could this reported symptom be caused by a poor connection? Of course it could, but its not likely just a single pin at the transmission, because that is not how the lamp is controlled. "This deal reminds me of a guy in 1979 that spent money at a repair shop on a 1970 oldsmobile that had an AC that would not work. So he has them check the freon low side and high side with gauges then a freon leak meter to check if the evaporator core was leaking into the dash area." Back in the 70's we had systems that would run the compressor, with or without refrigerant in the system. "I saw the car being tested and got to talking to the customer standing outside that shop about cars. I told him i was from another shop and would go look at it. All it took is one question from me to where i gave one answer. I ask the gauge maniac..Hey??? Is the AC clutch engaging on the compressor, he says I dunno, i told him start the car!! He did and the Clutch never engaged, i told him change the 2 cent glass fuse under the dash and IT WORKED" So "the glass fuse" is supposed to be the ONLY thing that would ever go wrong and make that Oldsmobile AC system not operate, or was that an anecdotal lucky guess? With the fact that the blower motor and the AC compressor shared the same power source, and if you had been given the information that the compressor was inoperable AND the blower motor wasn't working, then you could claim a logical step to that check. Aside from that, other common failure points for that compressor clutch circuit were the AC control head, the five wire plug that was at the rear of the right hand valve cover, the thermal fuse that was alongside the compressor (most common failure point) and of course the clutch itself. BTW, if the main system fuse was blown, most common cause, was a bad blower motor. Did you have them measure the blower motor current or simply leave it to fail the fuse again? "That sounds like people i know. One is a lady that has a 2005 ford probe. It sort of vibrates while in drive with the ac on. I have told her over and over and over and over..It needs to be idled up a tad!!! But that dumb lady has since then had a mobile station change the timing belt and motor mounts and even the distributor and she's spent 700 dollars and it still needs to be idled up as i told her 6 months ago." Ford stopped making the Probe in 97. Besides, a typical 2005 has no way for the owner to correctly make any kind of an idle speed adjustment. You can tamper with the system, and with settings like the throttle closed position. But you WILL cause problems by doing that, and then the car will ultimately have to go to a pro that is trained and equipped to service the car correctly. Which would mean he/she would have to reset the throttle plate to its correct setting, and then diagnose the original issue. If an idle speed correction was truly necessary, its likely done through a software update, or in some cases with bi-directional controls through the factory scan tool for a given manufacturer. Refer to the appropriate service information to be sure!...See MoreTime saving hint
Comments (13)I spent some time researching the online banking thing. I was a bit surprised. My sister signed up and has been using it without charge (although they tried to and there were some battles). Never thought about the charge to STOP using it! Well going through all the fine print and the agreements, and the part where the $2.95/mo fee is waived, yadda, yadda, well what did I notice? In order to do online bill paying your online account would be automatically upgraded to the "premier" online account and the $2.95/mo fee would be waived for as long as you use the online bill paying. If you stop, well, they didn't say there was any way to get it put back to the free online account. So I decided to stick with the normal, totally free online account where I could check statements and account balances, and keep paying the bills as I have been. Then I went to Qwest and did some more digging. Now they allow payments without a fee. Apparently I could even put it onto my credit card to get cashback! Not totally sure about that but I'm going to check it out. Now I don't have to prepay many months which bothered me since you have to prepay your phone bill anyway which bothers me. So lexi7, another BIG THANK YOU for that tip! People should check into that if they're interested. Although in reality I would likely keep paying it through them anyway, which means it likely wouldn't impact me, I just don't like the sneaky way it's set up. I'm going to continue to pay it through the companies....See MoreSandy's aftermath
Comments (86)Annie I think you'll have to agree that the areas effected by Sandy today cannot be compared to storms of 1938 or 1944? Nor can Sandy be compared to Irene, Floyd, Gloria, Donna, Carol etc. The infrastructure (transportation, electricity, gas) of today are MUCH larger and more complex than in 1938 or 44. The areas are more populated and more developed along the coast than 1938 or 44. Thankfully today building codes have improved and are better designed to allow structures to withstand higher wind thresholds. Fortunately technology has advanced as well, alerting us to storms sooner than in 1938 or 44 allowing those in harms way to evacuate when told, or for those who remain, to become better prepared for what may come. Yes, these areas experience snowstorms and blizzards and probably have (or should have) alternative heat sources - allowing them to stay warm if the electricity goes out for an extended period of time during a snowstorm. The sources helping the area today have done this before. Perhaps not for your particular area, but have on other occasions under much worse conditions than those of Sandy. I think people have to realize that it is going to take a long, long, long time to rebuild - and some may never. I think the important thought for those affected is to hold on. That help is out there and on the way - from all over the country. It just may not happen as quickly as they'd think or like, but its on the way. People need to pull together to stay strong and to stay safe....See MoreChristmas Debt
Comments (48)I remember way back when the grandkids were really little.. and how they just loved coming to our home for Christmas... On Christmas eve, each one would get a beautiful perfect orange, and then we sat them down and told them the Christmas story (The biblical one, not the "Night before Christmas" )before they were tucked into bed. We told them that the number of gifts was not what was important, but what those gifts represented... However, their parents did not agree and those kids had every toy you could imagine.. their bedrooms looked like a ransacked "toys r us" store.. I might add that these are my step grandkids.. and that these grandkids parents divorced over money (read bankruptcy), and their mom has always lived beyond her means... often getting into financial difficulties. But now has married a man that is working hard to keep her living in the manner she wants to... big house and mortgage, and sense of entitlement as well...The only real time we hear from them is if they want something... Their dad passed away some years back from Brain Cancer... so he was not really able to be much of an influence on them in their formative years... My daughter.... I think is finally starting to see the light.. she is watching our son bail himself out of the CC trap... and doing it well and without financial aid from other sources.. We offered to help him negotiate with the credit card companies, but he declined and said that he will do all of that himself.. and so far has gotten several of them to settle for a percentage of what is owed along with NO interest for 18 months...so that is why he wants to make sure he gets them all paid off in that time frame. He does income taxes as a side job from Jan through July. (extensions you see) and all of that income goes to pay off those CC's.. He has lots of regular clients, so we all think he will have a large percentage of that debt gone by the end of this tax season. Both my DD and DS have realized that they are middle aged, and time waits for no man (or woman) and if they want to retire in some semblance of comfort, that they had best get going and do something about it... Another light at the end of a tunnel.. My step GS has just married a lovely woman.. who has a son from a previous marriage, but she is one frugal momma !! And it is rubbing off on GS.. and he is actually talking about moveing to Pennsylvania just to get away from the materialistic influence of his mom and sister.... and his wife couldn't agree more... I suggested Nashville as an alternative as he works in the music industry... so who knows.. CC's are a wonderful tool, if used properly, but it can take your arm or leg if not careful.... and can be the downfall of those that consider material things the top priority in their lives......See Moreeld6161
