J. R. Johnson Supply (Ripoff)
Comments (0)This company resorts to a trick to rip the customer off on shipping. The web page showing your cart has the following statement: "Shipping cost will be calculated by our shipping department at the time of shipment.: $0.00" One would think that a small item like an inline hose filter costing $10.40 could be shipped by USPS for $2-3. How about $14.51! When I received an email from them giving this shipping cost, I immediately called them to cancel the order. They said it had already shipped and to add insult to injury there would be a 25% restocking fee if it were returned. I spoke to their sales manager, Mike Cunningham, who told me that there was a $6.95 handling fee. And where does that appear? Not on the cart page. It is buried in fine print on one column of their home page. Yet the $7.56 to ship a small, lightweight item, is still not justified. Why do other major gardening suppliers like A.M. Leonard, Park Seed, Wayside Gardens, Henry Fields, all show shipping costs on their cart page and you don't, I asked. He said their software doesn't link up with UPS. But their statement on shipping claims that they will choose the best method which could include USPS. Clearly, this firm is attempting to rip off its customers by concealing their shipping charges....See MoreFavorite mail order companies for plants?
Comments (10)Have also been very happy with the two Mara already mentioned. Can also check for (or make) comments about particular suppliers on the GW Rate & Review Vendors forum. Almost Eden in LA and Mail-Order Natives in FL are two others that have delivered nice plants from interesting inventories. Dogwooderitternet in AR sells a variety of good quality starter-size plants through their ebay store; though do have to hunt harder for their natives as they've added more exotics over the years. Shipping really hurts cost for larger size plants, so shrubs and trees we could only obtain by mail have easily been 3 or 4 years behind sizes we'd have bought if available at a local nursery. Good suppliers will know when/how they can reliably ship to your address; slower (lower cost) options might be available for larger items in the cooler months, but most of the small stuff now does fine year-round with 2 or 3 day delivery. Edit: Have had 3 plant orders misrouted or lost over the years and the suppliers have made good on all but 1. That was for a gift tree someone sent us from an Amazon partner that would never disclose their physical address. Unfortunately you can no longer submit a USPS insurance claim without the sender's address and the replacement they claimed to have sent never showed up at the address we confirmed. So, would be very cautious buying online from anyone not established enough to either disclose physical contact info or work through an enforcing intermediary like ebay....See MoreUSPS 'Uninformed Delivery'

Comments (20)I also had problems w/USPS & another carrier. One package I was waiting for it to be delivered & all the notifications says was as we all know it's in transit, (that took days saying same thing), than arrived different locations, next its out for delivery expected to arrive by 8pm. All day I've waited at home, checking up on the status & see if there's any updates. I even called the carrier & received nothing but their automated answering machine stating they're in this big meeting call back in an hour, so I did & still same message. Next email I received was my package was going to be delivered another day due to circumstances. Before you know it by 7pm another email says it was delivered knowing it wasn't. So email them about this problem, they responded their sorry this n that. Yes, I finally gotten my package delivered & our mail lady says there were 25 other cases....See More- 8 years ago
