It's September 2015, howis your build progressing?
Comments (229)@amberm145 I have to chuckle at your post about the electricians. I went and helped my Dad put this sucker up one day. He was sitting on the top of a 16 foot ladder while I was hanging over the railing handing him each and every crystal ball. They were all numbered and had to go in a specific order. To say the hooks were small is an understatement, I'm surprised he could even hold on to them. He was fine, but I was the one shaking like a leaf even though I had a railing to lean against haha! (I was about 20 ft up) I think I was more nervous for him than anything. As for an update: Finally caught a break!! My bulldozing guy stopped by last night and informed me that the County called him because they saw him working on my property and also saw my "clean fill wanted" sign. They are bringing in 50 loads ... for FREE! Which is huge for us because it's not cheap here (is it anywhere?!) and I'm going to need a total of about 120 loads. I had a company bringing 30-40 loads on Friday so I had to ask them to move that to next week. I felt bad but simply can't turn down free fill. Hopefully this will help pay for the changes I had to make to my kitchen haha!...See MoreIt's September, 2016- How is your build progressing?
Comments (276)Lily'smom, I'm so happy you posted a pic of your sweet house-I love the yellow and the mix of siding. I remember last month you made a comment about the turmoil you'd go through if anyone tore up your plan when someone asked if you posted it anywhere, it made me LOL. April Z, I've loved seeing all the pics of your house and definitely love the cottage! Doc5md, it definitely takes longer than expected especially living on acreage but it's worth it! Time11130, I'm with you on the door stain question, I was wanting to stain my doors a little different from the floors but can't decide yet! I'm loving your exterior. Casa di Villani, I have a new baby too but can't imagine being my own GC. I'm at the house all the time with my baby in a front carrier. Your house looks awesome. My debacle with the exterior brick continues but the mudroom floors just got finished so at least SOME brick (it's actually porcelain tile) is making me happy! The grout dust is still there but you get the idea. The pic is from the garage and the door ahead is a side entry door. Here's my exterior brick with some mortar scratched away to make it lighter (left), where I tried to whitewash it (middle, fail), and how dark the rest is (right). The fireplace unfortunately has the same brick as the outside. They pulled all the dark mortar out of the fireplace and were going to add white (not the one in the pic below-whiter). I'm just not loving the brick-I know it will look better with white mortar but right now it's hard to see past it looking like a 1970's basement fireplace. Plus it's just not what I envisioned. This was what I had in mind I'm wondering how labor intensive/expensive it would be to pull it all out and put the porcelain tile but cut down 2" in length to tie in with the mudroom... I don't like the size of the mudroom tiles (they're 2x10, I wanted 4x8) but that size was the only color porcelain I found that I liked. Man, everyone is gonna hate me soon! But my GC said we're not doing so bad since this is the first thing in the entire build I haven't been happy with. Mortar not in yet, yucko. Sample board is the color "white" but not white enough. I just bought "Avalanche" which is whiter. This was right after they pulled all the mortar out, some bricks came out too...See MoreIt's February, 2017- How is your build progressing?
Comments (147)cslaughter27 regarding appliances: I had a lot of problems with a new Samsung fridge and range in a previous remodel. For our new house, I went with the Kitchenaid with the pro looking handles. I was very close to going with the JennAir, with the current rebates the price difference was only a few hundred btw at a local appliance store. Then I was on the best buy website and saw the fridge as an open box with "like new" condition at a nearby store for almost $1K less, buying online did not offer delivery so I was a little hesitant at first. I chatted with the online rep and confirmed that if I did not like I could return with no issue, no restocking fee etc. I went by the store over the weekend to look at my purchase before arranging for someone to pickup, I saw an identical fridge for several hundred less than even what I had paid. I looked mine over and chatted with the sales manager, he agreed to reduce mine even more and since I added 2 more appliances I received all 3 for the 10% off. Total savings was over 2K less than the "best price" I could get from another local store during the presidents day sale and I don't have to wait for any rebates to show up on some prepaid debit card. There are no dings, dents, scratches etc and they wrapped it up while I was there and moved it to the back to wait for the delivery date. BB had free delivery AND install, also their 5 year warranty was less because the total price was less, that added to several hundred more in savings btw. Even if you are not interested in a display or open box item, it may be worth your time to go into the store and talk to them they may have more pricing options that what is available online....See MoreIt's March, 2017- How is your build progressing?
Comments (169)I was up there earlier today. I had hoped to go up to the wood stove place tomorrow, but Massachusetts is expected to have a load o snow... we'll get cold rain down here in CT. At any rate: This is my house in snow, what remains today: (PS, two hours south at my home in Connecticut: "Leaves are Brown, There's a Patch of Snow on the Ground, And It's a Hazy Shade of Winter" - about one foot by one foot, and maybe 6-8 inches high -- the little that remains from the big snow a week or so ago...) Anyhow, back up here: Inside, Ladybug, Ladybug, fly away! I hear there were a bunch more when I wasn't around. I finally got to go out on my future back deck. I'd say about 1/3rd, or a little less, has been planked. It was a great day for my builders to be out there, and they enjoyed it. The dangly thing is the bathroom vent. The windows will eventually be framed in with wood. My first time out here! To the east... the steps will go down about where the ladder is, and will go about 2/3rds way down. Then there will be a 45 degree turn, flat. Then, another 1/rd 45 degree corner turn down, to the ground. Those stones off to the right? About where I will have a flagstone/flat stone patio. Lookin' back to the house.... Exterior color is named "almond", as per the unpeeled nut. The sun side will need a second coat, and it will all need a clear coat/preservative late this spring. By the way... the windows will only have grids on the top, NOT the bottom. Gonna be removed. I signed my sig in the basement. We are now adding in the workroom, root cellar, and the basement bath for cleaning up after man, er, woman-handling the livestock....See Morevinmarks
