How much shade for rhodies/azaleas in Zone 7b/8a in central Alaba
Comments (3)The oaks and your liquidambar are both compatible with azaleas and rhododendrons. They generally provide filtered shade not dense, their leaves decompose slowly providing a long lasting acid mulch, and they are normally not surface rooted. I can't answer your questions on specific spacing though - here in this maritime climate I can grow rhododendrons in full sun. Is rainfall normally an issue for you or is it just this year in particular? Ideally, open sky above them would allow them to benefit from what rainfall you do have, while still receiving enough shade from adjacent trees as light patterns change during the day....See Moreneed recommendation for zone 7
Comments (1)I am also on the border here in new jersey..I would not recommend celeste for a new fig owner they are finicky drop fruit and produce small figs.. I would recommend Marseillis vs black hardy fig of medium size good flavor. Dottato a green fig good amber center real sweet, or third would be a black mission if you like the mission fig taste medium size fig good fig taste. also learn how to winterize your fig in our area it is very important for a fig tree for the first few years 5-7 to be winterized and protected from freeze damage. Pruning is also something you will need to do to keep your tree under control next to the house. as if left unpruned and mild winter you could have issues. All your answers can be found in this forum or others email me if you have specific questions I can help.....See MoreHerb recommendation for zone 7b/8
Comments (4)I'm already growing most of the ones I like to eat/use, including thyme, oregano, lavender, basil varieties, bee balm, and mints. I like parsley and sage, but have struggled with growing both of those. I'm trying borage this year. I like to use my garden to try new things -- whether it's edible, medicinal, or just beneficial for the insects -- and I'm fairly new in delving into the world of herbs....See MoreStreet lining shade trees zone 6b/7a?
Comments (12)Sorry for my delays in responding. The need auto be about 8 feet from the road (I think range is 5-10 or so). We can plant any variety and I think we can mix or do whatever as long as they are from the list. I do not know the ph or soil type. I do know there are many rocks in the land here (when we excavated there were many large boulders). I do not have a landscape plan in place yet. They have told us we need to plant 6 trees, but for symmetry I think 5 would look so much better so I am going to approach them today and see if we can do that. Below is where I was thinking of putting them. They are supposed to be every 35 feet but I think there might be some flexibility due to driveways and things. its the let me do what I want, there would be a gap larger than 35' between the left and right of the drive (each box is 10' if you enlarge the picture). We have already planted October Glory Maple and Princeton Elm in the backyard (we wanted trees that would grow quickly so we can get some shade sooner than later)....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
