How much shade for rhodies/azaleas in Zone 7b/8a in central Alaba

I've been growing evergreen and native azaleas and big leaf

rhododendrons on my fairly shady property for about 4-5 years; they

are growing OK but not blooming very well. I've probably got too

much shade. Most of my trees are 30-40 year old water oak, sweetgum,

southern red oak; they are on average 70 feet tall and 12-14 inches

diameter and have been growing in a forest-like environment, fairly

close together. I've been trying to thin some and prune up the

limbs; I've got most trees at least 15-20 feet apart now. But my

questions are:

1. What spacing should I shoot for? How high should I prune the

limbs?

2. Which tree species to favor? Are water and southern red oaks and

sweetgum compatable with azaleas and rhododendrons?

Any trees I cut down are likely to damage some of my existing azaleas

and rhodies; but I can whip them back in shape or replace.

Oh yeah, someone please send some rain our way so I can plant some

more azaleas and rhodies.

Thanks for any assistance,
