Questions about a tiger egg on my tulip tree
Comments (9)First, I collect the eggs by netting a female tiger. Most female butterflies are gravid (pregnant)--that's their first order of business for survival. Then, I put her into my 5' net container with the host plant (host plant must be touching top of cage (use a stool to elevate) and a pot of Zinnias. I keep her for maybe a day or two. Then I let her go. After the eggs hatch, you can cut Black Cherry for them (I put the cuttings into a gallon spring water jug and stuff papertowel in the top to keep the caterpillars from getting down into the water), but be careful with spiders and other predators. I've found large spiders where I'm sure they were tiny when they sneaked in. I also make sure I mist the plants and cuttings once a day. For some reason, Tigers need this extra moisture (a friend taught me this). I keep the container in a mostly shaded area--too much full sun can bake caterpillars/pupae in a container....See MoreNewbie has question about eggs
Comments (14)Betty, The problem with the cats eating each other is mainly when there are later instar cats with the newly hatched. They are so much bigger and can move faster, the new babies can't get out of the way fast enough. So as long as they are all about the same size, you can "house" several cats together, provided there is enough room for them to pupate without being on top of each other. I purchased some small vases from Walmart and use those to keep the food fresh for the cats. The necks are rather small and keep the drownings down to a minimum, although some cats do occasionally go exploring and end up in the water. Enjoy your new hobby (aka obsession) and don't beat yourself up over the ones that don't make it to adulthood. It happens. Sometimes we don't know why, they just don't. Just the fact that you are providing them with food and a safe house free of parasites and would be assassins is a big help to them. I read somewhere that the survival rate is somewhere around 15% for butterflies in the "wild". In my experience, I have had about 85-90% survival, so I guess I am doing something right. About a week ago, I brought in some monarch eggs and never saw the cats emerge. So I left the leaves alone (they were in a cage with BST chrysalids) and yesterday, suddenly there were 3 cats on those dead, dried up leaves! (Boy were they happy when I supplied them with fresh food!)So, just because you don't see them right away doesn't always mean they didn't survive! Comments (2)Relax she knows what she is doing. Sometimes the female will skip a day and then lay more eggs or maybe she is done. When she is done laying she will start to incubate full time which is not necessarily 24 hrs a day. They know what to do even without our help! Comments (2)Kathy, thanks for your advice I went out this evening and used one of my grandkids plastic spoon since they're tiny and removed the eggs ever so gently, one of the babies thought I was mom and had its mouth open for feeding LOL...but I was able to remove the eggs and I brought them into my house and cracked them and they were not developed just yolk so maybe on her next nesting she'll have better luck with all the eggs....See Moreplllog
