How far away from oak tree?

For various reasons, we are opting (ok, really cannot have) raised flower beds when we redo my flower beds...that includes lasagna raised beds. We are going to dig down about 12 inches and amend/fix up the soil. The closest any flowers will be to our willow oak tree is 12 feet (that is to the large roots coming out at the base of the tree)....most are 16+ feet away. How worried do I need to be about feeder roots at that point? I will be growing perennials and annuals. Can I just learn to have my flowers co-exist with the roots? There is PLENTY of sun (8-11 hours western) to hit the flowers in that area, so I am not worried there. :)

Just to clarify, there is still plenty of room around tree. Digging down will be in areas already covered in the surface, so we will not be taking out any real amount of surface roots.
