How far away from dwarf fruit trees should I set permanent stakes?

I'll be permanently staking some apples on M9 or M26 rootstock, some pears on OHxF 333 or OHxF 513, a sweet cherry on Gisela 5, some peaches on Peach Redleaf, and an Apricot on St. Julian A. I'll be using 6' metal t-posts for stakes, and will be setting the stakes at the same time that I plant these bare-root trees. How far away from the trunk should I set the stakes? I'm thinking 6-8" to allow room for trunk expansion and growth, but I'm interested to hear others' thoughts.
