How far away from house do I plant a climber?

I'm putting in Sally Holmes at the front of the house, so she will "climb" the front wall, and I'm wondering how far away from the house to plant her?

It needs to be away from the wall far enough to catch the rainfall. I.E. not under the eaves of the house.
If you don't have guttering on your house, then it would have be even further away. So that it is out of the spatter zone.
A simple way to train the rose, is to put in a long cane which you angle back to the wall, and train the rose along that, to the wall.

I agree with Daisy - far enough away to be out from under the eves, and also not where it will get smushed by the water falling off the eves if you do not have guttering. SH is a big rose - you can use a stick, as Daisy suggests, or a small trellis, but even with nothing it will eventually start putting out long canes, which you can train back to the wall - put them in as close to a horizontal position as you can, and they will put out flowers all along the cane.

promethean_spark's "1/2 the normal plant spacing" works for me as well for most things. A couple of points to keep in mind: (1) the concrete will absorb and retain heat longer so while some plant roots will benefit from that extra heat in the early spring, it can be a plant killer in mid-summer. Plan accordingly. (2) If you plant tall things like tomatoes and peppers or corn near the outside edge it makes it quite difficult to reach the middle of the bed for care and harvesting. Thank you everyone for your input and ideas. Bboy - I'm having a hard time envisioning what you are talking about with the "green river" There are many Saucer Magnolia's in this area that seem to be pruned to be a smaller tree. There are some larger ones but I've never seen one 40 ft across. Even the largest oldest one's I've seen that have trunks like 3 ft wide (Seriously I'll have to go take a picture of that tree it's awesome!) aren't that wide. TALL yes, but 40 ft wide? not that I have seen. Of course, I'm sure it's possible but is it not also possible to prune it enough each year that it doesn't become that wide? Is this something that we can do to keep the tree in that location? The pine tree's in the backyard on the right hand side will be cut down at some point. That's down the road in our goals for the house. Thanks for the questions. The reason I don't want to really put it dead middle is that I like asymmetry, yet balanced - and also it would have to pretty much be smack dab in the middle of the yard to be wide enough away from the house. I'm not usually fond of tree's smack dab in the middle of a yard in front of a house. Thanks for all of your input and ideas. Hubby and I are talking things over and trying to decide what we will be doing.

I agree with John. Styrax are best viewed from below the tree because the blossoms hang down like bells. :-) I would plant it quite a bit further than 3 ft. from the house. One of mine is just out my back door and it's about 15 ft. away from the house and above my back driveway. Any closer and I'd have a problem with a lot of leaves and seeds in the gutter.

Hi Susan, Welcome to the forum! How high above grade and how wide are your beds? And, will you be planting one row or two? If your raised beds are four to five feet wide, you could plant either a double or single row, but I'd change the spacing depending on what varieties I was planting and whether they were determinates or indeterminates. I'd also stagger the two rows in an offset manner. If your raised beds are three feet wide, I'd plant a single row and I'd plant them three feet apart, or maybe only 30" apart if they were determinates. There again, it depends on the plants. I prefer to keep the plants a foot or so from the wood, but 6" or 8" isn't bad. The roots are going to spread out some, but mostly they will grow down into the soil. Sometimes my roots go down to the bottom of the bed and then under the boards and into the mulched pathways. Roots go where they want! Of course, I wouldn't put a tomato plant 3" or 4" from the boards if I could avoid it cause that might be crowding them a little bit. With the jalapeno peppers, 15" pots ought to be fine as long as you have a good soil mix that drains well and also keep them well watered (moist but not soggy). Good luck, Dawn

Also it is good to have space between the rose and the wall for maintenance/painting of the house, as well as air circulation for the rose foliage.

I'm in zone 6b and grow Sally over a small entrance to my kitchen garden. I has only gotten to about 8 or 9 feet in as many years, but it only gets about 3 or 4 hours of afternoon sun. It has wonderful bloom in the spring and a little latter on. My point is that it is not very vigorous with me and I'm not sure that it will reach the bedroom windows. Perhaps someone who grows it in more sun may have a comment as well. But then that asks the questions how much sun do you get on your front wall and how much black spot can you tolerate. Best, Nick

Gee. I thought I researched this one well. It will get more than 4 hours of afternoon sun, but still. I only really need her to get to about 6'. I'll cross my fingers.

Thanks for the advice on planting. It rained here yesterday and I can see exactly where that drip line is. I'll make sure I plant SH beyond that and train her back.
