Where should I place my linear drain?

Was at a bath store that carried Infinity Linear Drains -- asked the lady her opinion about proper drain placement and she didn't have the answer. My builder also didn't seem to have a strong view one way or the other.... Haven't had a chance to meet the plumber and tiler, but would like to turn to the forum for some advice....

I have a fairly large shower -- 9' by 5', there will be shower heads on either side of the shorter wall, with a long skinny window right in the center of the longer wall. I believe the drain should probably be on the long side, but which side -- closer to the wall? Or the entrance where the glass is? Also, assume the drain will have to run the entire length? Not sure if these drains come 9' wide!

I would put it closer to the long, back wall. You won't find one THAT long, but a good tile mechanic can give you the proper slope and make it work. Tiling and the slope would be easier for him to do an end wall...but your money, your choice.

Thanks Avanti. Thinking about it again, it might make more sense to have the linear drain at the blue line (against the long wall), because if we had it at the red line, that would mean I'd have a step down crossing the threshold (drain location would be the lowest point in the shower), defeating the purpose of doing a single-sloping shower...

I have been watching your posts, too, waiting to see the shower done. Yay! Very modern-looking tiles! Is that a porcelain version of diamond plate? Very nice. I am still doing my planning. We are not ready to start buying yet. We are getting quite close, though. I have a concern about the linear drains that I do not see addressed anywhere. I am hoping that as you start to use your drain in the next few weeks, or as Lori starts using hers in the months ahead, the problem will come up. It has to do with hair. I lose a lot of hair each shampoo. I used to have a mesh bubble with a metal rim that went over the drain, but I would be ankle deep in water before my shower was over. Now I have a Lint Trapper, made for a laundry tub, stuck in the drain. It catches the hair, which tends to stay low, and the water can still go over the top and drain. I pull the hair off after every shower. The slots in all of the linear drain covers I have seen look like the hair could slide right down and go into the trough. From there, it is downhill into the actual drain. How does one stop the hair?

seems like it could be a tough one since smell is subjective (although there's probably something out there that can measure smell) plus if more than 1 of u can smell it that'll help. I'm just thinking ahead if u need to file a complain with the licensing board. How long has it been since u texted him? was a good with texts before? i hope he's getting in touch with who he will and then get back to u but would be nice if he let u know he got your msg and will deal with it. I have a very sensitive nose so this problem would be a big one for me. I just got a bunch of air purifiers and have been learning more about pure air. your nose is telling u something. glad u r listening to your body

I’d want it as close to the front as I could get it without the light rail cutting into the beam. (Per the specs, these have a 110-degree beam angle.)

My first thought was on the stairwell wall also. You'd have to get your cable or whatever wire to that wall though. What is behind the sectional where you are taking the picture from? Kitchen?

You need to coordinate the drain placement with inspection, not your designer.

its going to be dictated by Vent location and the linear drains Waste outlet location O.C. Your expert tile crew and plumber will give you options

Have you had a linear drain before? I hated mine. If anyone using the shower has long hair, you will spend an inordinate amount of time cleaning it.....
