Survived storm, now thinking about cleanupo
Comments (12)A friend told us to call the United Way because they were advertising tree removal. We called and they seemed very responsive and said they would come out. We planned to make a large donation to the charity once the trees were removed. Well they came out, started cutting up some trees, including cutting one down that was leaning at a 30 degree angle, and then they stopped. Apparently a manager for the United Way showed up and told his workers to stop working because our house wasn't in "need" of their services. This frustrated my wife because she asked the United Way rep on the phone when she called as to whether they were offering services to "all" people, as well as what services they would do, and she made it seem like we qualified for their service. So now my yard is in worse shape because I have this extra tree laying across the yard, whereas before it was still standing, just leaning quite a bit. Yesterday my neighbor came over and told me about the United Way, and then I proceeded to tell him about our ordeal. He suggested I call them again and see if they would be more willing to come back out once the critical removal gets done. I would much rather give the United Way a few thousand dollars as a donation than to a tree service that has been reaping the rewards of the storm. At least the donated money will go back into helping the community. For now the trees are not a problem and they can wait until things calm down. Comments (2)I have no suggestions or knowledge about the butterfly bush but isn't it strange that wind would do that to the bottom branches. I am sorry to hear that now you have a strange looking plant and may not get blooms this year. I would plant the Zinnia's around it and just see what happens. I am guessing it will grow more but won't bloom so covering it may be a good idea. Too bad though. We all wait all year for blooms and to have that happen...what a shame....See Moreoff topic: gustav monster now category 5 storm/ hanna impacts..
Comments (3)Hi I'm getting terrific gusts and frequent downpours and I'm over 600 milea away lol. This right after the record setting downpours of Fay. interesting how the level of Okeechobee was at historic lows due to the record drought. and now is setting at 10 year averages.in less than a week!! The decision to lower the water level will come today. Gustav is going to have terrific unexpected effect and Hanna at the very least is going to drop a lot of water. I know for a fact that my soil can handle 20 inches of rain in 24 hours. i only got 8 in 3 hours from Fay while areas north got up to 30 inches. Noted that the engineers are saying that they doubtful the levees in N.Orleans can tolerate a direct impact .I pray they don't experience a repeat of Katrina Here they are fairly confident the Lake O can handle up to 19 feet of course depending on the strength and duration of the winds. all that would be required is around 10 inches in 24 hours in the right spot. Imagine 75 square miles of water coming at you all at once?? Good luck to all those in the path of G Gee there;s still 3 more months of season lol gary...See Morecoastal ct storm right now! (map pic)
Comments (2)OMG, all that red on the radar toally fizzled out when it came into my area. I'm on the deck watching these lightning bolts about 15 miles away through the trees of CT, listening to the claps of thunder. 5 minutes later nothing. No rain, no thunder, no lightning! Oh well. Blue skies within 20 minutes. Radar showed the red disapeared when it came over Stamford. What's that all about? lol...See More- 9 years ago
