Share your Crassula ovata Jade Plant
Just got this Jade plant few daya ago. There are moss growing on top of the soil. Trunks are thick about 30mm.

6 years agoNice jade, I really like the moss. I whacked my jade earlier this summer and made a couple Kokedama balls from the cuttings. So far they seem to be doing alright under the fluorescent lights at my work desk, though the one on the left looks like it's getting a little leggy.

Comments (7)Christopher I would agree with you, You don't give a zone or where you live, are they getting enugh sun, They should be in full sun, and watered thoroughly at least once a month, Cut back all the tips of growth cut off the first of October leave out side for air circulation and fertilize and water again. I've had mine in the same pot for 20 years, they love to be crowded. They should all flower for Christmas, they can take down to at least 20F, In Northern England they can be flooded; freezel die back to soil line and come backing smiling. In Africa they grow on rocky hillsides and live on fog that rolls off the rocks down o their roots They are east coast growers in Africa. They get no care and only the fertilizer the anamals leave. Comments (21)Regfrigs are kept at 45F they can handle that. I always put the tulip bulbs in the refrig, and they flower for me the past 30 years or more. On a more serious matter, and on topic. I don't believe it's the age of the plant that make them flower, it's the growing conditions you are applying. "Jade" like to crowded. I am always surprised when one of my cuttings come into flower after only one season. But I live in Calif. so I do things differently then anyone else. Only my plants reward me. Comments (8)Joe, I am not sure if they are supposed to be winter growers but, like Deva, mine have been growing this winter as well. I keep mine in three different facing windows of my house with no additional lighting and at room temperature (my house is about 68 degrees with moderately energy efficient windows). None of them appear any better or worse than the others. I don't fertilize mine at all and never have but I haven't switched to gritty mix yet. I really think time is the leading factor in how woody the stems get. I have several different aged jades that have had similar care techniques and the older ones are a lot woodier. Thicker stems are generally a result of pretty aggressive pruning, or whacking. I always trim the lower leaves once they get considerably larger than the rest, which will help create a thicker canopy. Comments (6)I have not owned a normal jade but do have a tricolor and did have 2 hummels. I ended up giving the hummels away, they were boring me because they were growing SO slowly, despite having good light. I had gotten them and the tricolor at the same time and the tricolor grew to about three times the size of the hummels in the same amount of time. I have it maybe 4-5 inches under a light. So I didn't directly answer your question but my point is, I don't think you should be scared to try either of them. I have seen them online/at nurseries/Home Depot for quite cheap so you don't have much to lose if you try them....See More

and two cuttings from them that just had plain leaves, no stripes at all...looks like there may be one stem on the larger one of the originals above that's beginning to put out some plain yellow leaves. That was how these two began so I need to nip that off.
Here's the others, nothing colouring up much just yet other than the Ghosts, the Hummel's will do their thing better when the temps drop more and day length shortens, back left 4 th pic x2.

Josh, I really like Maruba Nishiki. I was eyeing a cutting on Ebay earlier this summer.
Here's 'Hummel's Sunset Variegated'. Is that the same as Hummel's Ghost, or is it a different clone?

6 years agoHi, stupidlazydog... I have always wondered if my ‘Hummel’s Sunset Variegated’ is something else too, and I was recently told it’s the same as an ‘Akai’ but my HSV has never had any red margins and my ‘Akai’ did when I first bought it... idk?

That's very helpful. I have a very old one that looks absolutely awful, and I even wonder if it's still alive. I think I will do some hail Mary whacks and see what happens.
What I'd love to see is a Crassula bonsai done over time starting with a small single stem plant, which I just bought, because mine are defective. I've seen a web page where someone removed the leaves from the 'trunk', and did a mini-whack at the top, but then never showed anything from then on (because there wasn't anything yet). That's what I'm doing right now as of last week. I'll have to post progress.
Here is a quick phone photo of one of mine. Keep in mind I've had no idea what I was doing. I grew this from a little cutting. I might ask advice on how to continue with this. What I mainly did is whack, let two branches form, whack, let two branches form. Except every other branch would only grow a single branch from that...I didn't know anything about letting other branches grow on their own.
