How did you push them to bloom early, Norma? I have a jade which I believe is old enough to bloom but it doesn't do anything!

I have one that has already set up flowers. The flowers haven't opened yet but this plant is always my first to send up flower stalks every year.

Well this year, my plant has nothing.....But after what Norma taught me last year, my jade put flowers out for the first time...

Okay what did you do differnt this this that caused it to flower.

Norma: I remember you saying something like a 20 to 30 difference in temp from night and day help..I also remember you saying a good prune at the right time of year may trigger too..

So I chopped it up harshly around the beginning of October and it changed it from it's usual warm spot, to a much cooler spot, or window and that was it...Many cuttings I gave away..Maybe it was more of luck and a blessing?

Norma this particular jade always sends up stalks in sept/early Oct. I don't pinch it, fertilize or do anything differently than I do with all of the others. Some bloom in November and some in Dec/Jan.

I haven't checked Silverina (giant old jade) yet but she usually sends up stalks just a bit later so I'll check her tomorrow.

By the way, this plant is about 3 1/2 ft. tall so maybe the older plants bloom earlier?

We had a nice cooler than normal summer here in Orange Co, with just a few weeks here and there in the upper 90's, last week 113 degrees. The evening temps were in the upper 50's a few weeks back so that may have been the trigger.

omg my .. my best friends mom gave her a jade when she was 12 .her mom passed when she was 32 and she is now 34 if anyone would like to sell me some seeds or a plant it would mean the world.. its harder getting those for me in oregon.. i can do a trade as well with succulents if must.(:

Hi Michele...Congrats on your early bloom buds!! How exciting! I bet your very cool summer and those few very hot days could have triggered your blooms. Nice to know you don't have to do anything special to get them to bloom...lucky you! Mine is doing great so far btw, :o)

Here in FL, in order to get Jades to bloom, you have to do a ritual dance during a total eclipse of the sun during a snow storm...well you get the idea,lol...

Hi airdale this if for you, The flower stalk may be called a peduncle, leafless penduncle or main flower stalk like from the underground parts of the plant or agave or perhaps a sansevieria, another name a scape. There is another one that I found but does not apply here.

Norma, I am also trying another idea you gave me on all my other succulents to keep them from getting brown edges and spots..So far so good.....

That's hilarious Mike...that's one I haven't tried yet(putting it in the fridge)...I don't have room in there for Jades :o)
Unfortunately I love to eat as much as I love jades...so its always full of food! Too funny!

If it does grow flowers, we will both be in amazement and she will be laughing at us..lol

That's what the vegetable bin is for Pug, the FOOD, so you can put your plants in the fridge.

Just kidding, but I seem to recall I'd put some bulbs in the veg bin years ago, can't say I recall the outcome.

Regfrigs are kept at 45F they can handle that. I always put the tulip bulbs in the refrig, and they flower for me the past 30 years or more. On a more serious matter, and on topic.

I don't believe it's the age of the plant that make them flower, it's the growing conditions you are applying. "Jade" like to crowded. I am always surprised when one of my cuttings come into flower after only one season. But I live in Calif. so I do things differently then anyone else. Only my plants reward me. They grow on rocky hillsides. Just don't try so hard to root them, lay them on top of the soil and see what happens. Norma
