Comments (5)The Woods Hole Library has an annual plant sale that raises a lot of money, but it took several years to get the sale to the level it's at now. They advertise well in advance, and they solicit contributions from all the gardeners in town - via personal requests, followed up by post cards - as well as from some of the local nurseries. We all start potting weeks ahead of time, and it's a social event for the participating gardeners; we talk to shoppers about what they would like to grow, advise on plants for various conditions, and sometimes twist arms to get people to try something new (that's my specialty). Of course, the library is a visible, public entity that everyone wants to support, and a garden club sale might not have that kind of community spirit behind it. That would probably depend on what your group does with the funds raised. A local garden organization (actually, it's the Civic Beautification Council) also has a sale at about the same time. I don't know how much money they raise, but it's a BIG sale and is completely different. They purchase a lot of plants at a discount from the local nurseries and also buy plugs in bulk, which they grow on in members' greenhouses. That sale is always a disappointment, because the stock is humdrum (lots of bedding annuals, some invasives), anything vaguely interesting is over-priced, if there IS anything interesting, there's no interaction between the sellers and the buyers, and not much of a sense of what you're supporting by shopping there. Not sure if these musings are of any help to you, but I DO think that having a successful sale depends as much on the "personality" of the event as on the actual plants. Getting the members to look forward to the event, to talk gardening among themselves and with the shoppers, seems to really make a difference. My 2 cents - DtD...See MoreFundraising for Animal Rescue: Any Ideas?
Comments (14)Well thanks for the good ideas y'all! Right now I'm leaning towards trying to do some cat related craft things and selling them with all proceeds going towards the group. I have seen great plaques and stenciled pet food buckets. The group has a table where things are sold every weekend during adoptions. I am thinking of trying to work out a system where materials from say a JoAnne Fabrics are donated to the charity and I get them to a group of teen sewers I know to produce tote bags and pretty aprons in some of those adorable cat fabrics. The kids in our area need community service credits to graduate from HS and thru the group I can arrange for them to get those credits for their sewing. They can do this on their own time at home where most other volunteering jobs are scheduled hours. I also think I could get art students to make cute plaques with cat related quotes. I've seen these in upscale boutiques and they don't look hard to make at all. I'd like to get Joanne's or Michaels or ACMoore to donate materials, kids donate time and receive community service credits, and our group sells these things at the mall where the pet store is. We could also rent flea market tables. Oh, and I thought for next year maybe we could make christmas tree ornaments with a cat theme, again utilizing the talented high school students who need those community service credits. What do you guys think? I would like to take on silent auction/wine event type things in the future. I'm just wanting to "work up" to something like that. The pro bono vet services would be great but that's really hard. Right now we are having a very hard time getting any medicines for the cats. These are tough times for all businesses and Vets are feeling the same pinch as everyone else plus there are more needy animals than vets could possibly help plus people with money troubles aren't able to take sick animals to the vet. We collect a small fee for the adoptions, under a hundred dollars to defray vaccinations, neutering, and other costs. Because there's been a huge drop in adoptions this year (due to the economy, we believe) those funds aren't coming it like they have in the past. Tough times!...See Morecharity fundraising ideas wanted
Comments (3)Betty, Just make a simple doll head, shoulders, with arms attached. Then make a rectangle of fabric sew a seam in it and make the seam area the center back. Leave an opening about 3 to 4 " in cb to stuff bags in. Fold in 1/2 so the seam is in the back and you can determine where the sides are, measure down 1 1/2 to 2" and make either buttonholes or slits for the arms to go through.Make a casing in both the top and bottom and run an elastic or drawstring thru.Stick the doll head and arms in and draw up the elastic or drawstring. On the bottom don't draw it to tight, otherwise you won't be able to pull the bags out. Hope this makes sense to you.I'm not very good at writing directions, especially when i can't draw pictures to go with them. As for the burp pads,i just used newspaper to make my pattern.I made a bunch of these 2 months ago for my new GGD. Kathi...See MoreFun and Unique Fundraising Ideas Needed
Comments (15)She is being inspirational Snidely. There are people with her disease and many others who need to know they are not alone and that life is worth living while you're on this earth. She will be presenting in the South Coast Plaza general area in October and is currently getting the word out. Orange Coast Magazine just contacted her yesterday for an interview. I just came here for suggestions on fundraising that isn't mainstream. Stuff that is not typical or generally thought of immediately when trying to raise funds for a cause. She has already done that approach. Just looking for other ideas. This kind of stuff has always been in her blood. She was accepted into the space program many years ago but met the love of her life, fell in love and got married. At the time, that disqualified you for that program....See Moreparty_music50
