Wisteria, but it does it every year no matter the weather.

Everything here in southern New England is blooming on time but with all the rain we've had this season, they're blooming fit to beat the band. The tall garden phlox is heavy with flowers and just this morning I saw a hummingbird outside my window sipping from the Rose of Sharon. The hardy hibiscus I grew from seed via winter sowing had more than a half dozen blooms on it this year. I had a grin from one ear to the other.

flowergirl - what kind of wisteria? My Chinese one has a secondary summer bloom phase, regularly producing a flower near where a long, whippy growth has been pruned back. My Japanese one though has never produced the secondary summer flowers - it produces vastly more new growth than the Chinese one does though!

gardenweed - hardy hibiscuses do indeed seem to be loving the weather this year and blooming like mad! We haven't had many humming birds this year but are hopeful that the monarch butterfly show is going to be a bit better this year than the last couple of years has been.

Yes woody, this one made me stop in my tracks and take a pic. Epimedium bloom here in May give or take a week or so. In July this one decided to send up a bloom. Very odd.

peren.all - that is indeed an odd occurrence!

woodyoak- I don't know what kind this wisteria is, someone gave me a seed about 50 years ago. I planted it too close to the house and my friend told me to move it, she said it could get big enough to push the roof up. I thought she was kidding me , but I moved it to the fence in the alley, and I'm glad I did. The base of it looks like a tree stump. The wrens live in it in the summer, they hate for me to even get close.

flowergirl - a 50 year old wisteria should be very interesting-looking! Can you post pictures of it? As a seed-grown plant, are the flowers nice and showy? Seed-grown plants often have inferior flowers. The 'big enough to push the roof up' comment implies a plant not pruned.... We keep both of ours heavily pruned to control size and promote flowering. Too many people don't prune their wisterias, resulting in the monster reputation of these vines! I suspect that, when the time comes for us to sell up here and move on, a new owner is likely to neglect the wisterias and probably eventually try to remove or kill them.
