Yes you can do it. Just don't trust that you have the power off till you actually test it. You should put a note on the switch that disabled the power that you may be killed if anyone turns it back on before you finish. The trick is in holding the fixture while you make the wire connections. Professional electricians have three hands or a clever way to accomplish this alone. Test your wire connection by tugging a bit on each wire while holding the wirenut to make sure the wires are secure. If things didn't go well when inserting into the wirenut they'll often pop right out when you do this step. Please explain your fluorescent question.

If you are referring to lighting, a rough estimate/generalization: Add width of room to length of room in feet. Then take the sum of those two numbers and that is how many approximate inches the light should be in width. For example a 10' by 12' room would need a light approximately 22 inches in width. (10' + 12' = 22") This is a generalization as lighting needs for any room should consider: Goal for lighting that particular space, ceiling height, number of bulbs, wattage, type of light fixture ect... Laundry room: 6'10"Wx 11'7.5"L = 18" Hallway: 3'Wx4'L = 7" Mudroom: 12Wx 10'8"L = 23" Pantry: 3'5"Wx5'9"L = 10" Or if it is flush mount something else... never mind. :)

I have 2 flush mounts and one semi flash mount..all of these are vintage because everything i really liked new cost too much. the semi flush is very cool Murano glass bought from Italy..the most expensive too-but I felt hard for it and gave it much thought. It's in the family room. To me it's not over the top, but it's not a light that one doesn't notice. I disliked big expanse of ceiling in that longer room, so it helps to break it. It's a very cozy light. the two flush mounts went in two bedrooms(we have four altogether) and were very cheap..in comparison to what else i saw and liked. 40 or so bucks for each one. Both of them have character, one, frankly, is a bit strange..:) But it's a rose glass..everybody feels beautiful in that light, so I put it in the guest room. I'm gathering crystals for it ever since..it's supposed to have crystals that were gone by the time I found it. I have a bit of a problem of attaching pics lately, so if I'm able to find whatever I have on my computer already-I'll try, but I can't take any new pics and download them. Now, when I was looking for lights for the house, it was two-three years ago..very limited choice of flash and semi-flash mounts(again talking of quality/cost correlation that seemed fair to me). Since then they (the manufacturers) seemed to improve and have a wider choice of lights. Sites like OneKingsLane and Gilt can carry many interesting lights but check their return policy-would vary depnding on a brand. Shades of Light is a nice site. Antropologie can have one or two flush mounts or semi flush mounts, that I'd check to see whether I like it, since their return policy and customer service is good, and you never want to be stuck with something heavier and bigger you have to ship back. Wherever you look check on policies first and foremost. It can be free shipping but then some sites charge return shipping and restocking fees if you send it back. But my preference would still be sourcing out vintage, because manufacturers did much better job back then. For same quality and finish I'd have to pay now significantly more. Also individual sellers care a lot about feedback, and usually do a great and very personal job of answering your questions and packing the lights. All my experiences were mostly very positive. My sources were Etsy, eBay and local Craigslist. But there are other sites too, obviously, they just tend to be more expensive. Knowing your style would help a lot, as mentioned by previous posters. Would help to make specific suggestions.
