Ignoring the whole north-facing, dark room issue for a moment. How do you want your family room to look? Whatever you end up with, it has to be something that you like, not just what designers say you should do. All the color advice in the world is useless if you don't like the colors, shades or tones recommended. So my gut feeling is that if you mostly like creamy walls with white trim, then that's what you should do in this family room, instead of trying to embrace darker colors. Creamy, warm, white walls will certainly brighten this space, while darker walls may make you feel it is too dark. Short-term, a lighter colored area rug or two will brighten up the floor and make the room seems brighter and airier. Long-term, I'd invest in more lighting. Two chandeliers, if the room size is large enough. Wall scones, definitely. And a few floor and table lamps for task lighting. You've got dark floors. Stick to light colors on the walls and mid-tones for the furniture. I moved in to a house with one room painted a dark, navy blue. It wasn't cozy, it didn't warm up the room. The color just made the room dark. And no matter how many lamps I added to the room, the wall color just seemed to soak up all the light. It was either paint, or saw the room off the house. So my advice is that if you like light-colored walls, putting up a darker color in an already dark room will not work for you.

I'd have no problem with a dark bedroom or dining room. A den would also be cozy if dark. I'd want the bathroom that I use to put makeup on to be lighter and I would not want a dark kitchen .... I guess it is about which room is dark and if one uses the room at night or in the daytime. In our house, there is a ton of natural light during the day, all by design. We have skylights, a solatube, 5 ft eyebrow window, cathedral ceilings, white wts (but those are mostly retracted during the day, white kitchen cabs and perky colors. At night, I like dimmer lighting for a cozier, moodier, feel. I like feeling cocooned in the eves. Our dining room and den are painted a rich purple (Purple Rain by BM) in an open layout and it makes those areas feel more relaxing. I also love rainy days and how nice it is to read or take a long bath in the dimmer light. Darker rooms are more romantic and just very intimate. I also think that transitioning to darkness at night helps one to go to sleep when it is time. It is important to give your body the rhythm of changing amounts of light. Many scientific studies back that up. If someone works nights or odd hours, then they need to work their environments to compensate if possible.

wow this does look really good. I would continue to work at this. I think the idea of lightening up the inside of the bookcase with the fabric wrapped foam would also help bridge everything. also maybe decorating the mantle with lighter objects to pull the lighter color over to that wall. maybe replacing the the stone around the fireplace to something lighter as well. overall it looks really beautiful; I'm just nit picking.

Ditto what Annie said. You are talking about the structural integrity of your house and it looks like you have a second story, and you probably also have a basement. By removing the wall, the beam needs to support the floor above and the roof. And if you're in a "snow zone" that has to be factored in as well. Another thing, walls are distributing the load from above to the floor or foundation. When you remove a portion of the wall, you are creating point loads on the floor or foundation, which may require additional work to your foundation in the form of footings or additional beams below. These are examples of how removing a wall can get complicated. Maybe you are already aware of this. I hope so! Edited to add another thought I wanted to share regarding openings to let in light. You're only going to get sunlight during the daytime. How often are you home during the day when you can benefit from the daylight? Painting the paneling and better lighting in the family room will to wonders for making the room look brighter. Also, consider replacing the back door with a slider. That will allow more light into the family room. This advice is coming to you from someone who is considering taking down walls to let more light into her dark family room. :) But I've been in my house a long time whereas you haven't even moved in yet.
