Problem with peace lily
Comments (1)Myself, I've had very bad luck with Spaths (peace lily), I just cant bring them to bloom and your problem is hard to understand if you have had the plant for so long and only after its being re-potted does it put up a fuss. Some plants just like to be left alone and only repotted when it breaks the pot. Spaths do no take kindly to fluorine in the water and such is suggested to be allowed to sit for 24 to 48 hours before watering and when watered, watered fully to drainage, then allowed to dry down between. Since spaths do take to low light situations, the present light should not be any concern. But, with the returning light now and in the days ahead, I think it would not do any harm to give the plant increased energy to make it able to do what it can do...including opening of leaves fully. The plant once given water fully, should be allowed to go bone dry between waterings. Drainage must not sit under the plant much more than 10 minutes before being dumped. Bright light---as much as you can give it at this time I think will help encourage the plant to open its leaves....See MoreProper name for Giant Peace Lily
Comments (16)I have about a dozen giant peace lilies from Lowes in Tampa FL. Because I have very little sun in my garden due to the number of the giant preservation grandfather oaks that are protected by law on my property, I must plant only shade loving plants. These giant lilies are not varigated in leaf patters and they are about 6 feet tall. The flowers are as large as my hand...gorgeous tropical plant. We may have a maximum of 10 evenings a year in winter when I cover my impatients, and other plants effected to near frosr/freeze temperatures etc., which protects them, and when I uncover them after the day or so deep in temperature, they are fine. I think the several times of covering and uncovering the plants during these sporactic temperatures are worth it. My impatients grw up to my waist, and stalks almost as think as my thumb in a mass planting. Every time the plants got leggy , etc, I would cut them back, use root tone and fetilizer, and place back in the ground. I was advised if I covered my giant peace lilies also in this same manner, that they will remain green and not die back or go dormant. Has anyone had that experience? Thanks. Comments (2)You probaby haven't gotten any comments because your peace lily is not a lily at all. Spathiphyllum are aroids....a completely different sort of plant :-) If the soil is consistently moist and has flies (really fungus gnats) that means it is overly water retentive or you are watering too often. A very common occurrence with most bagged potting soils. And this can lead to root rots as well as creating a very favorable environment for the gnats. I'd look for or create a faster draining soil mix - check out the 5-1-1 recipes on the Container Gardening forum. And I really dislike any self watering containers. They were developed for the gardener's convenience rather than the health of the plant and can often lead to these overwatering issues, especially with an inferior soil mix. And check out the Houseplanst forum if you have further questions. Spaths are most often discussed there....See Moretropicbreezent
