It's probably a hybrid, so you're not going to be able to identify a particular species necessarily. Also, there are a number of Spathiphyllum cultivars, and the differences between them are not all that pronounced in some cases. I know all this because I have a large Spathiphyllum at home that I've been trying to figure out a specific identity for for a few years now. I settled on 'Sensation,' because I had to call it something, and that's one of the big-leaf plants, but probably it's actually 'Mauna Loa' or 'Supreme.'

'Mauna Loa' is one of the oldest cultivars, and is relatively common. According to my grower guide (actually a lot of this is going to be according to my grower guide; it's the only place I've seen any of this stuff get spelled out at all), 'Mauna Loa' is a hybrid of a hybrid, and consequently can be more variable than most plants. Specifically, the flowers may be large, small, green, white, or any combination of the above.

'Supreme' is a 'Mauna Loa' that does better at having all-white flowers.

'Sensation' is huge, and can get to be 5 feet tall (my plant is nowhere near that big, but I want to think it could be if it would just apply itself), and is a cross between 'Supreme' and 'Fantastica,' which he tantalizingly leaves undescribed.

Then there's 'Lynise,' a more drought-tolerant variety, and 'Deneve,' with foliage that is less shiny and more textured.

If you're getting the impression that a person could get a Ph.D. in Spathiphyllum, well, I suspect that's actually the case. I haven't even gotten into his list of medium- and small-sized varieties. In the absence of other information, I would assume 'Mauna Loa' or 'Supreme,' since they seem to be older varieties and would in theory also be more widespread because of this.

Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it. The leaves are 10" across and 24" long not counting the petiole. The reason I bought it was due to the highly variegated foliage.

Those giant peace lilies are one of my favorites. they require minimum light to produce fab results, and they respond to my heavy handed watering technique. Fast growers indeed! Mine bloom huge flowers all the time. A nice tropical look this plant gives off....

A huge spath WITH variegation? I'd love to see a photo - I've never seen one.

I used to care for an enormous 'Sensation' on one of my jobs, and I adored that plant. I turned the acoount over to one of my coworkers. I miss that plant. Another coworker said that 'Sensation' should be called "a spath with a drinking problem"! That thing could suck down the water, but gosh it looked so amazingly tropical!

Well, that's probably not any of the ones I listed, though it's probably a cross with one of them. I've never seen a giant spath with variegation either.

Like most of the spaths at Lowes where I found it there are 2 in the pot, only one is variegated.

Wow Randy, how in the world do you find so many variegaetd plants? Is your Spaith a Mauna Loa? I believe ML is the largest of Spaiths..They can grow 5-6' tall and 5' across.
In the first pic, what are the variegated plants growing close to the ground? I remember you mentioned finding a variegated 'weed' LOL..You're amazing..

My wife made me get rid of the variegated Poison Ivy a few years ago... if I was anywhere near it I was affected. She was thinking about buying stock in Caladryl.
Toni, the plant on the ground is a variegated Pentas. I found the Spath in Lowes down the street. I found a few more species of variegated weeds but I don't know the proper names.

The only variegated Spath is "Domino" which can get pretty large if kept alive long enough. Iv'e always had spider mites on mine so bad that they eventually die.

I've had my Giant Peace Lily for almost 3 years, and I cannot believe how much it has grown, it almost as tall as I am. I'm 5'9". I water it about every two weeks and only feed it during the summer.

I have about a dozen giant peace lilies from Lowes in Tampa FL. Because I have very little sun in my garden due to the number of the giant preservation grandfather oaks that are protected by law on my property, I must plant only shade loving plants.

These giant lilies are not varigated in leaf patters and they are about 6 feet tall. The flowers are as large as my hand...gorgeous tropical plant.

We may have a maximum of 10 evenings a year in winter when I cover my impatients, and other plants effected to near frosr/freeze temperatures etc., which protects them, and when I uncover them after the day or so deep in temperature,they are fine.

I think the several times of covering and uncovering the plants during these sporactic temperatures are worth it. My impatients grw up to my waist, and stalks almost as think as my thumb in a mass planting. Every time the plants got leggy , etc, I would cut them back, use root tone and fetilizer, and place back in the ground.

I was advised if I covered my giant peace lilies also in this same manner, that they will remain green and not die back or go dormant.

Has anyone had that experience?
