2014 online retailer review
Comments (49)I got the balance of my Burgess order, so I figured I'd follow up. It seems to be a definite "some things are better than others" type of place, so hopefully this will help someone figure out what is most worth it: Rose bushes and peony trees (bare root) came looking quite decent, and all of them have continued to be alive in my garden. A few have been slow to leaf out, but nothing arrived dead or rotted, and everything seems to be getting along now. Humming bird vines arrived looking like sticks - they were alive, but sticks. All are still alive, and one is leafing out, so, OK. The things are supposed to be impossible to kill, so I'm hopeful. Clematis came as cute little spider-looking root nodes. Fairly fresh looking. They have all sprouted up nicely. Honesuckle vines looked like a bit of a mess when they arrived - it was hard to tell what was supposed to be planted, what was root vs. vine, etc. I've got nothing out of those yet, and for all I know I planted the darn things upside down. Day lilies came as nice little root bunches, and all are sprouting up nicely now. The bare root trees I had received earlier all still appear to be alive (they're flexible and show green if you scratch the bark), but not a one has leafed out yet. The little potted lemon and lime trees I got came looking good, but the lime was suffering such a mineral deficiency I'm still not sure it will make it. Maybe 3 years from now I'll have a stand of nice little trees started for next to nothing and I'll pat myself on the back, but I'm not awfully impressed on the tree front just yet. Overall I'm still giving Burgess a solid C. I'd never accept it if I'd paid anything approaching a usual nursery price for what I got, but overall I think I got what I paid for....See MoreCan you avoid risks of online banking?
Comments (6)My parents had thousands stolen from their checking account. By online thieves? Hackers? Nope. By a dude walking into a branch and filling out a withdrawal slip. Multiple times. They got the money back, but it was a PITA and the bank really wasn't all that interested in helping them. If one of my mother's former students hadn't been an employee, she might still be fighting w/ them. Meanwhile, banks, credit card companies, etc. all store customer info on computers. And they back up that data on tape or disks and ship it off to storage facilities. And sometimes, it gets lost. Or they accidentally throw out computers laden w/ SSNs. Or a laptop is stolen. This has happened a dozen times just in the last year in the US. To hundreds of thousands of people. So not banking online doesn't make you any safer. Make up a good password and check your accounts regularly. You won't be any more vulnerable, and you'll catch errors/fraud quicker if they do happen....See MorePositive stuff on online retailers
Comments (12)Agreed about the online sales tax. We have roads to drive those delivery trucks over because of taxes that support a common infrastructure. Someone's got to pay for that stuff and it winds up being defenseless, voiceless children in absent monies (i.e., shorted education budgets -- I couldn't understand what I was talking about here either!) if we're all not careful. Also, another downer-voice to add here is to be sure to check carefully about the warrantees from some of these places. There's no regulation, I guess, for these online sites so consequently they can really just say whatever they'd like. For example that they're an "authorized dealer". But if you call, say, Franke, or Whirlpool - just pulling those names out of a hat - point is if you call the actual manufacturer and ask, say, "is homeclick an authorized dealer" you should be prepared to receive quite the talking-to. For some manufacturers, having bought the product from a non-authorized dealer won't really make much difference in the event of a failure; they'll still honor a warrantee. Others are cracking down and saying no authorized-rep, no service. And sometimes they're not really very nice about it either -- which is a little bizaree since it's actually really quite difficult, as a consumer, to know who's authorized to sell what (not to mention why). Nevertheless -- it's something to think about and investigate if you can stand to. And doing so requires more skepticism than I for one am even comfrotable with. That is, when I see a sign that says "authorized dealer", I am inclined to believe it, even to the point of arguing with the actual manufacturer ("but it says..."). So from there, YMMV. After starting to wake up to what a big bad world it sometimes actually is out there, and in weighing all the political pros/cons of brick-mortar vs free-market arguments and the like, I have been immensely happy doing online business with ABT in Chicago -- they price-match, are in fact authorized reps, with salesmen from a "real" brick-mortar" store who will talk endlessly and patiently with you and ... they will go to bat for you warrantee-wise. I will forever be grateful to them for just handling several problems with a Miele oven. Those guys are totally amazing. Chicagoans on this site have piped in that they are in person too. I'm glad you've had good experiences with homeclick but until you've had a problem you'd like to be supported on, it's hard to know how they've performed. It's like saying "yeah, my car insurance is *great* - I've never had a claim!" -- which is terrific but doesn't qualify you to comment on the insurer's capacity to, um, insure you....See MoreHeirloom fruit tree online retailers
Comments (2)Legg Creek Farm is a Texas online company that has older varieties of peaches. They have low priced trees, free shipping for Texas orders, but require a $100 order. I ordered from them this year and they had good looking trees. Womack Nursery is another Texas company that has alot of trees. The good thing about ordering from a Texas company is that they should not be in transit as long. The Legg Creek nursery order shipped on Friday and got to me on Saturday. The less time on the truck the lower the death loss, at least in theory. Just Fruits and Exotics in Florida has some older varieties of apples but are kind of pricey, but good reviews....See More- 7 years ago
