Need help choosing an exterior color!
Hello all,
I am soon to renovate my 80's home with a new roof and Hardie plank siding. I'm really having trouble deciding on a color scheme. I'm trying to embrace a "cottage" feel with the mansard roof, the trim and the fact that we have a large wooded lot. I'm undecided if I want to stick with Hardie's more neutral colors (Monterey Taupe, Aged Pewter, Light Mist) or go bolder and pick my own non-Hardie color.
The house is currently a color really similar to Hardie's Light Mist (very light blue) and our lot is quite shady with all the trees, making me concerned about going with a dark color. I'm also unsure about the fate of the shutters. Please excuse the overgrown landscaping, it's on it's way out.
To give you an idea of my tastes, here's 2 houses I think are just beautiful...I'm just not sure the colors would work on my home.

Comments (9)Wow thanks for the input, guys! While I think the green works, it's just not my thing. I have played with gray browns, taupes, and think they look nice. I definitely want to stay with neutral earthy tones but I'm not feeling the green. I am also conflicted about the tudor-style, or board and batten, trim. Do we paint it the same color as the siding to reduce the busy look, and perhaps paint only the perimeter trim a different color? This was a question our painter asked because it's sort of in style right now. I think the beige garage door is what irks me the most. Have you chosen a roof color yet, or do you have some choices in mind? I would want a contrast with the roof so the house doesn't look monolithic with the roof being a similar color to the siding. Here are the three colors you mentioned above -

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoHere is our house. We had new windows, siding, and gutters put on in November. It's a bluish gray color from Royal siding. It is slightly less blue in person.
I couldn't decide on a color and DH (he loves blue) felt strongly about this color. The shingle is Weathered Wood from Timberline.
The house is surrounded by trees and is partially obscured from the road. We're on a couple of acres.
I wanted to add at times I think our house recedes into the trees but still has a presence. I think a dark color surrounded by trees can be quite rich. I'm still working on landscaping, and it was recommended to put some flowering plants next ro the steps so that will be next.

And the after!
Just wanted to post an update - we went with Quarry Gray shingles from Owens Corning and smooth pre-primed Hardiplank that was painted in a color match of their Deep Ocean color. The shutters were removed and wider window trim was installed. I love how it turned out - it is the bold blue I was looking for!
Now I am considering what color to paint our new entry door, any thoughts? Am leaning towards a bright red (something like SW Real Red) or bright yellow (SW Decisive Yellow).
