Finally finishing the finishes! TKO to the max!
Comments (34)Chloe's Mom, I was joking about the ugly--the swivel is fine. But, yes, very dangerous. I've been plopped onto the floor by these several times. Swivel pedestal chairs would be cool! Very mid-century. We had them when I was little (Atomic age, but swivel). I thought of orange grout too! And nixed it for the same reasons. But also because I don't want to call attention to the floor. I had a really dynamic floor once and learned my lesson. If you have a really really great floor people will look at it. I want them to look up. :-) Kris, it's the perimeter that will have the pond. I flirted with granite that looks like river rock for the island, but wised up. It would have drawn all the attention, and I really don't like granite for kitchen counters. Hence the tile. :) The inspiration for the pond was really the tiles. The frogs. And waterlilies, vines, bamboo and ginko blossoms. I just loved them. And everyone has been giving me grief because the giant I painted where there are no upper cupboards is going away. This'll give 'em something to look at....See MoreFinally - Elizpiz's Finished Kitchen
Comments (135)firsthouse, thank you so much for your kind words! If you go with the WZ backsplash, you will love it. We have been using our kitchen heavily and it looks just great still. So, here are some pix of the soapstone. The first three are with the counters freshly oiled last Friday. The next few after that are the same counters, after a dinner party for eight, plus our daily cooking and "wear and tear" - taken this morning (Tuesday). It's hard to tell in these photos, but the counters are actually lighter, with most of the oiling residue gone. The counters have gotten naturally darker over the few months we've been using the new kitchen; I would say that they are not as light grey as the sample photo in my post above, but certainly not as dark as when they are oiled. The last couple show you the counters with a wipe of an oiled cloth contrasted with the "day to day" look. Do a search for trailrunner's kitchen; she does not oil her soapstone and you can see how lovely they look (she does a lot of baking, so you can see really nice variations in the counter colour, where she kneads her bread). cawfeegirl, thank you! I have seen your posts and know how exciting it is to be "in process" good luck! Cheers, Eliz...See MoreOne Year later.......finally some finished photos....(DFW)
Comments (8)Thanks, terriolsen! I'm going to have to ask my PB what colors were used on the deck......I know it was a 2 color powder release with some sort of skins stamp, not sure the exact pattern......I'm VERY anxious to seal it after seeing hwade's gorgeous pool and deck: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/pools/msg010104021225.html?63 I REALLY like the stamped concrete and have been pleased with it! Let me get with the PB for more details hopefully!...See MoreFinalizing everything (in the kitchen, anyhow) (PIX!!)
Comments (7)Thanks for the comments. Saw40st8: Yes, great choice on the cabinets :) Re: the closed off entrance to the kitchen: actually, in the original floor plan, in front of the entryway was a long hallway which led to the FR. You had to turn left to get into the kitchen. The dashed line representing a header in the drawing is actually where the old wall was. We normally just walk into the kitchen via the DR anyhow. This alteration takes an underutilized hallway and makes it part of the kitchen. plllog: Glad you love the color too. Re: the prep sink: that's exactly what we're planning on doing. It will probably be the Elkay pie-shaped sink: and yes, the faucet will be on the diagonal, making it easily usable from both sides. As for demo: looks like mid- to end- of May. The waiting is the hardest part now......See MoreSue 430
