Comments (17)Yes, to lime or not, or how much to lime, you really need a systemic evaluation of your environment, especially the plants you grow, the water and fertilizer you use. But I think it's a good idea for the bagged soil (most are limed to be 6.5 based on my own test) to be limed, given that most fertilizers are most available to plants in the PH range of 6 to 6.7. They have to accommodate for average gardeners and most plants, most plants do well in this range, even gardenias and camellias. But Gardenia thrives better at the stronger acid side, say 5.7 or even 5.5, some avid gardeners at south China, they use solely coarse absorbent sand, pine bark, peat moss and pine tree needle compost to make the container medium, which is on the stronger acid side. The gardenia and Camellias are flourishing. They use only rain water and composted soy bean meal tea as the fertilizer. The only way you can be sure is to investigate an accurate PH and EC meter, then you can tell how acid is the soil and how much resolved fert in the soil. This meter can get expensive. Mike, you Osmanthus is looking good. The foliage is a nice green. But the leaves are a bit on the spare side. Normally one flush can grow up to 8 leaves in a twig, most of yours are two. Mine has 6 or 8 all the time. Are you giving it enough sun? Or it could be a specific variety, I am not sure. I will post a picture of my Osmanthus recently, it's so bushy. So fare I have the Gold, Silver and Four Seasons variety. In the four seasons, I have FudingZhu, TianXiangTaiGe and RiXiangGui. FudingZhu is my all time favorite. But the RiXiangGui is flourishing for me as well. It's a four seasons, blooms more than 300 days in a year and the flower is gold, which is rare for four season. The fragrance is so much stronger. Comments (35)Ericta，your plant, I think, has got some damage on its root sysytem. Comments (12)@fragrant2008 does your osmanthus fragrans has any scent? kew's webpage said it won't thrive or flower well at uk. but I am still going to try. I have the light yellow flower cultivar and I am going to get the orange flower and white flower cultivar to try. what does fortunei smells like? it's hardy at uk. I guess it will be easier to grow than fragrans? thank you for the photo. so the 5:1:1 mix is similar to orchid mix. it has very good drainage and it doesn't hold much nutrient in the "soil". you have to feed it weekly weakly like orchid? I love michelias. it has nice fragrant flower species. it's good that there are michelias species easy to grow at uk. I will add them to my wishlist even I don't have a garden yet. if one day I have a garden, I will grow all kind of delicious scent flowering tree and shrub include daphne and Chimonanthus praecox. right now, a fragrant leaf pandanus, a plumeria, an epiphyllum, a magnolia alba has take up a lot of my indoor space. I am trying to keep them small until I have a garden which I hope I can get in 3 to 4 years. which plumeria cultivar do you have? you had said it didn't smell much. has it improved or you find a better cultivar? 4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoUnfortunately I do not have enough data to compare. The strongest fragrance had my 10' shrub that was supposedly a plain species, but that is just in comparison with the tiny sticks of Ri Xiang Gui and Tian Xiang Taige I planted 2 years ago. Although this summer I am starting to think those 2 are indeed something special. They both bloomed a little in June and July which never happened with my old unnamed shrub. When they reach a good size it is quite possible I would be able to smell them from a very long distance even in the summer.
Another thing I found on one of my Tian Xiang Taige plant a week ago is a greenish mutant flower like a quarter in size and with some tiny leaves inside. This may be what they are referring to as "flower in flower, leaves in flower" or something like that in the Chinese articles about this cultivar. Again, I am looking forward to seeing and smelling them when they reach a good size.
