Large island or small island and peninsula?
Comments (19)I had a similar dilemma with my kitchen. Most advised that I go with a large island, I wanted a peninsula with no island or with a small island. While I incorporated much of the advice I received, I opted to go with the peninsula for a couple of key reasons. Given the points your laid out in your intro, these reasons might be helpful to you in your deliberations: - it defined the space between my DR and kitchen. This was difficult for me to explain to people online, but I wanted that definition and I felt the lay out of my house cried out for it. It was difficult to appreciate without actually being in the space. - with a large island in my kitchen my messy clean up run would be visible from the LR. Although my kitchen/DR/LR are semi-open concept, I wanted the best of both worlds by concealing at least part of my kitchen from both the DR table and the LR. Peninsulas have fallen somewhat out of favour I think because many peninsulas in mid century and '80s homes block access to the kitchen, forcing people into a narrow passage to enter the kitchen. I allowed for a wide passage into my kitchen past the peninsula, and the lay out of my house is such that people would have rarely entered the kitchen from the area where the peninsula is regardless. You might want to consider this issue as well. How wide is the aisle at the end of your peninsula in layout 2? I agree that large islands are "in" right now and that may be why many people default to the island option. As for the usefulness of a small island, my temporary island is 48" x 38", it is just about perfect as an unloading zone for my pantry and fridge and for prep across from my hob. My permanent island will probably be about 50" x 36". It is small enough not to be a barrier. Good luck....See Moreisland vs peninsula in kitchen and hood vent design question
Comments (20)I like this plan a lot. I had sketched it out this way but wasn't sure it was really enough space. Thanks for taking the time to show the dimensions. My one concern about the refrigerator placement is whether of not it will make the kitchen feel "boxed" in when I am working in it. Maybe just when I am at the sink?. Question- could I put the DW next to the refrigerator without struggling with the DW door when it is open? I would most likely house my dishes and silver ware in drawers at that end of the island. It's nice to be able to move things straight from the DW into their storage spots without having to first put them on the island and close the DW door. I like the idea of the pantry. Do you have the space next to the pantry as a coat closet or the W/D? Thank you so much for responding and taking the time to sketch and upload. I am very, very appreciative....See MoreHow to fix awkward kitchen layout? Tiny Island? Peninsula? Double Ls?
Comments (30)I don't really see the advantage of the peninsula in the double L from the original post. I think the traffic flow would be much improved (especially around the refrigerator and range) without it. You could also move the sink closer to the nook, which would help the traffic flow to the DR (especially with the DW open). You'd lose a bit of storage, but corner cabinets are not ideal (were you thinking a lazy susan/super susan, or did you think you would access that cab from the other side of the peninsula?) The ideas put forth by Mama Goose and RL are great, but I wanted to throw out a less ambitious (i.e. cheaper) suggestion....See MoreKitchen peninsula or island table for a cool modern home?
Comments (40)Lucky you! Your house is beautiful! If it were mine, I would put a very long dining table behind that long sofa instead of that small round table. Then I would create a long island to leave the 4 feet of walk-through space needed in your kitchen. If possible, I would use the solid wall for tall cabinets to house all small appliances, pantry storage and counter depth refrigerator. On that island, I would put in the sink and 2 dishwashers, plus pull-out trash bin. You can see that gorgeous view while doing cleanup and food prep. In no way would I lose those floor to ceiling windows! Just my humble opinion, but in this case, form trumps function! But I feel the function is there in this plan. You will still have plenty of prep space on the island, plus there is some counter space on either side of the stove. But it would seem that that view is the reason you are building there. I wouldn't compromise on that....See Morerantontoo
