How many bean seeds to plant at the base of an obelisk?
Comments (4)I built me one teepee. In the 6 foot circle surrounding the base, I put in 20 or so bean seeds. Most sprouted at the same time, but a few lagged and are sprouting now. Comments (2)While I grow a lot of soybeans, I confess that I have never tried them in containers. However, a healthy plant takes up about as much space as a bush bean. The 6" spacing cited by Ikea will produce bushy plants. It's also woth noting that the healthier the plant, the greater number of pods with 2-3 beans... if spaced too closely, you will get a higher percentage of single-seeded "pollywogs". Since soybeans have large root systems, my recommendation would be to allow about a gallon of soil for each plant. There are 231 cubic inches to a gallon. As a frame of reference, at 6" X 6" X 6" depth, the root area per plant at Ikea's spacing would be 216 cubic inches. If the depth of soil in the pot cited above is 5", you would have about 300 cubic inches... so for best results, I would recommend one or two plants only....See More4'x8' - How many Tomatoes, Peppers, Squash is too many?
Comments (15)Hello again Villian189! I am glad that you are rethinking the size of your beds. There are many knowledgeable people on this forum and I am sure you will receive some great advice. I am happy to share what works for me. I have six 4x4 SFGs with paths wide enough to allow me to run a mower in between the gardens and kneel down at the edges of the garden and reach in to every square. I have a trellis at the north edge of most of these beds made out of 2x3s with nylon trellising for vertical plants. I have found that planting 3 vining tomatoes along the 4-foot wide trellis works best. As gblack mentioned, you will get more production from each plant if they are given the room to thrive. I do prune the tomatoes a little and weave them into the nylon trellis as they grow and also wrap them with twine to the trellis supports. The tomatoes do crowd the row of squares immediately in front of them by mid-growing season. So I plant spring greens in these squares (lettuces, arugula, spinach, etc.) before the tomatoes are planted out. If you keep the lower branches of the tomato plants trimmed, they will provide a nice shade canopy for the greens as the summer heats up. Ok, according to Mel BartholomewâÂÂs The All-new Square Foot Gardening book, suggested plant spacing for the varieties you wish to grow are as follows: Tomato plants, vine type = 1/square along a trellis Summer squash, bush type= 1 in a 9 squares (3x3 area) Winter squash, vining type = 1 in a 2 squares (1x2 area) Basil = 4/square Oregano = 1/square Cilantro = 1/square Parsley = 1/square Peppers = 1/square Eggplant = 1/square Pole beans = 8/square along a trellis Lettuce = 4/square So, if I understood your latest post correctly, you plan on building two 3x4 SFG. This will give you 24 squares to work with. In this following suggestion, I have assumed you will have a trellis along the north side of each garden along the 4-foot side. SFG 1: Back squares: 3 vining tomato plants can be planted along the north side along a trellis. Middle squares: 3 squares of greens and/or lettuces. 1 square herb. Front squares: Peppers and eggplant, they will shade out your lettuce, but it may help keep the lettuce from bolting when the weather gets warm. SFG2: Back squares: Pole beans - plant these towards the back of the bed right along the trellis and they will only take up inches of your garden space and grow vertically. Middle and Front two squares, plus extra room from the partial bean squares: 1 bush type squash (such as zucchini or yellow summer squash) Remaining squares: herbs or a pepper. Comments (15)Chispa and 3onthetree, I think you were closest to understanding what I was trying to ask. :) The spacing by the hood is 12" at the narrowest point so there is room for sconces there. Is it too much to have both those and pendants over the island? Or which would you choose? I am undecided on lighting inside the glass cabinets because they are more for useful dishes rather than display. (The rendering is for layout only and does not show any tile, trim, or countertop choices.)...See More

6 years agoOakley , I had trouble with mandevilla too ! They look better in the nursery , once they get in my car it's a rapid downhill spiral from there .
This is in Spring when things looked fresh . My favorite trellis is the gold one in the middle . My dh bought it for me for Christmas. It is covered by that rose now . That's just a few I have . Others have just roses on them . :) hope other folks chime in and photos are encouraging!

6 years agoSorry it took so long to get back here, I have the little grands with me today.
I'm in OK., in the middle of wheat country, all flat land, not as pretty as your area. We do have a creek just east of us that's pretty. lol. We're on 2 acres, and DS built a house behind us on the other acre. No other neighbors.
We have a greenhouse which has Lavender on one side, which is now in full bloom, & the other side is full of Zinnia's, Gaillardia's (sp), Black-eye'd Susan, Cosmos, and some Lilies.
Since the remodel, we have a lot of yard, but not a front yard, so I had two nice areas to grow flowers and some have stopped blooming because of the heat or something.I hope you don't mind, but when I took the pictures I didn't bother picking up the hose, etc. My handy broom in the picture is used every morning when I tend the garden due to spider webs. :)
To the right of this picture is a row of Roses, which all have The Plague now. They had a nice flush though.I'm waiting until next spring to replace the rug. My son's driveway is to the right of the picture.
My favorite plant, a "Surprise Plant" that I got at Walmart. It went nuts!

Most of these trellisses are repurposed from stuff I collect at yard sales, craigslist, fleamarkets and some from plain junk. Heard the saying " One man's trash is another man's treasure". Enjoy! If anyone gets motivated, the pictures posted served the purpose.

6 years agoOakley- I love your yard and garden !! Your Vinca pots sure did take off and your mystery plant is lovely too , I haven't seen that before either. What do you keep in the greenhouse? I bet the lavender smells amazing. Did you do anything for the soil there ? Not sure what kind you have but I have been afraid to grow lavender in my clay. What a dream ! Especially in winter . Someday...
Aluva - your trellis are amazing ! You have a very artistic eye to take one thing and make it another! I especially like the one made of wheels . Very neat ! I also keep an eye out for things to repurpose but certainly have not been that creative . My only real repurposing was this ladder and bird feeder combo I love. It has been swallowed whole by a honeysuckle I let get away from me .
Maybe the honeysuckle needs to go but I have a small troop of hummingbirds and I hate to take away it's food. Even though I have two more honeysuckle.

6 years agoLily, I don't know why I said Surprise plant, they're Circus plants. Three plants potted together. I googled circus plants and they are Sunbeam Bidens, Waterfall Blue Lobelia, and Aztec Red Velvet Verbena.
The Lobelia bloomed for a month, the Verbena stopped blooming then started up again, now it's stopped. But the Sunbeam Bidens, let's just say I am buying more next summer!! I love them, and they spread like crazy! Right now they're about 2' x 2', full sun.
