Thanks for the citation--I have seen this site before but don't think I bookmarked it. It seems that diagnosing specific nutrient deficiencies in blueberry plants is a little complicated. I'm afraid to just start adding things based on hunches and end up adding too much, creating more problems. I think I am going to: 1. Add a little blood meal to the soil--I understand this is not a "bad" source of nitrogen for blueberries and is fairly quick-acting. None of my leaves are dark green, so I suspect this is an issue. 2. Add some magnesium in the form of Epson salt. Looking at the photos from the website Jim recommended, this deficiency is the 2nd leading candidate for my bushes' problems. Please let me know if anyone out there thinks I'm going to make things worse by taking these steps!

Here in Madison, Wisconsin, blueberry shrubs often turn red in the early spring, and this would include the bark, the buds, and the first leaves. As the ground warms, and the air temps go up, in April, the shrub gradually turns green. I am not certain that red bark, or red leaves, is a sign of disease or distress, in a blueberry shrub. It might have something to do with growth, a stage that the plant goes through, on the way to setting flowers in the spring.

Blueberry leaves will often take on a reddish hue in spring, especially in the cooler conditions that you're describing. It more than likely has to do with mineral uptake and soil temperature, but there's no need to take any action -- they should green up nicely as spring progresses.

They look pretty good to me. The bushes are small now so every leaf imperfection will be highly noticeable. They are most likely older leavers that need to drop at some point. Judge BB by the health of new tip growth and new shoots from the crown.
