Should I polish vintage brass candlestick holders?
Comments (24)Now we know how many cannon balls it takes to fill Nassau Hall... But seriously; LINDAC92—I respect your POV. And; YES! I have "visited" all those places. I'm also a graduate of The Art Institutes. I have seen some ancient Asian metalwork in the Smithsonian and even the other museums you cited, which still have much of their natural "patina" (define this as you will). My reference to museum curators was given as support of my point. (Which, being); that IF a metal worked piece is deemed to be a valuable original creation of someone such as PAUL REVERE, then the undertaking of any restoration is best left to experts. MANY fine items of significance are ruined every day by well-meaning individuals who attempt restoration but end up applying inappropriate or even harmful methods because they are simply ignorant of what they have in hand. Ultimately, when it comes to antique and/or vintage items of significance, I still maintain, that unless one is cognizant of any given piece's providence, and its real potential market or historic value, that any such undertakings are best left to qualified individuals. THE BOTTOM LINE: Admittedly, the majority of inquires on this forum are in regard to items of much less significance. Still, if an owner of an individual piece plans to keep it for their own personal enjoyment, they should clean it as they wish. BUT, if they plan to sell it to the collector market, it's ALWAYS best to leave it "as is"....See Moresmall space; where to put toilet paper holder/what kind?
Comments (7)Familiar question! My preference is to have it on a side wall next to the toilet, if there is a wall to put it on. I like it best in line with or just forward of my knee and about waist high when sitting. I find that makes it easiest to reach for the TP without learning or twisting (something I cannot do because of herniated disks). HOWEVER, we just redid the guest bathroom and I must have been asleep at the wheel when the architect specified the vanity size. The toilet is on a long wall between the vanity and the tub. There is about 21" between the vanity and the toilet and a little more to the tub. My options for the TP holder are (1) on the back wall behind the toilet, (2) on the side of the vanity and (3) opposite the toilet - about 3 foot span - on the wall where the towel bars are going. None of these are good options for someone who can't twist and reach and especially not for a child who, I think, might fall off the toilet just trying to reach! Had I been alert, I would have made the vanity longer than the 36" it is and mounted the holder on the side of the vanity, closer to the toilet. This is still not ideal because the vanity is only 21" deep and the toilet comes out beyond that so there would still be twisting to reach. I am reluctant to use a free-standing holder because the ones I have seen in peoples' homes look cheap and often seem to rust. Any ideas?...See MoreGreatest TP holder EVER!
Comments (8)Ah, but it helps to know where Hemet is. Hemet is in the high desert in the middle of pretty much nowhere. Your neighbors down the hill would be mostly retired folks in variations of trailers, mobile homes, etc. There are a lot of "retirement facilities" there. Then there are the neighbors who came to get away from it all so they could cook meth undisturbed. A while back some motorcycle gang was setting booby traps for local law enforcement and fire fighters. That sort of thing kinda keeps the property values down. Love the TP holder!...See MoreDumb Question - TP holder
Comments (2)Can't help you on a recessed cup/toothbrush holder, but Lenape makes a ceramic recessed TP holder. It will come with instructions for installation. They also make a tile-in non-recessed cup/toothbrush holder, it just gets set in place along with the tile. Your local tile dealer should be able to order Lenape products; Eclectic-Ware is one online dealer. The model number for the TP holder is LEN-225, the tile-in toothbrush holders are LEN-1580 or LEN-1883 depending on configuration. FWIW, should it be necessary, they also make tile-in porcelain towel bars and rings....See Morebac717
