This would be a custom thing and you may want to have latches on it so people can't push the opposite one open from the other side, even by accident.

Thanks, I know I could get custom and thought about the security issue. Just can't believe I can't find one to buy. So many people have back to back bathrooms due to plumbing. It make so much sense to me anyway.

Hi Darzy, I said nothing about a visual pass through. It would be made of wood and each side would have its own secured door. One bathroom is rarely used, but I would still like some extra storage for guest items. This saves me from buying 2 separate cabinets. I think its a great idea. Sorry if you got the wrong impression.

What immediately comes to mind is the pee cabinet in the Dr's office bathroom that passes through to the lab where you place your urine samples to be tested. Not anything that I would ever want anywhere in a home. Or that any guest anywhere would want.

Darzy, One cabinet with a door on opposite sides. So if you open one side you could touch the back of the opposite door, but you can't see through because its wood and you can't push it open unless its unlatched. I don't know how to explain it any better. .

Sophie, I absolutely don't want glass, so there's no point in even comparing this to a pee cabinet. Of course I wouldn't want that in my home either--jeez.

I don't really think you are going to find something like this mainly because plumbing walls are not really standard sizes. The wall between two baths could be anywhere from 4" to 8.5" and almost anything in between depending on if they ended up shimming out a wall (which was done often in the days of cast iron pipes).

Also common plumbing walls have mostly disappeared. Plumbing stacks are no longer massive cast iron towers and so the need to run plumbing through a common wall has largely dissipated as wall sizes have stabilized.

Finally, it isn't a product most people would want. Really, I am not sure anyone should want it. I know it seems great, at least until someone is using the facilities in a noisy way while the other person has the cabinet door open. You have gone from a fairly airtight and noise reducing wall to a thin very much not airtight or noise reducing door. Test this if you want by sticking your radio in another room and walking to the next room and then stick it in a cabinet and close the cabinet.

Also as a young teenage boy, I would have "needed to open the cabinet" every time I heard my sister open the cabinet. Mostly because I was a teenage boy and attractive containers and all. I sure hope you don't keep a creme in the medicine cabinet that needs to be applied to private parts since your private parts have a real chance at public display when people are using both baths.

Now this is not to say this will apply to your home, I am only explaining why there isn't a real market for this.

Recessed medicine cabinets use the depth of the stud cavity. You cannot have two cabinets sharing that depth unless you want something incredibly shallow that wouldn't hold a toothbrush. Plus, the plumbing vent is usually in the way, and that is why surface mount cabinets are infinitely more popular.

Just a bad idea . Put a surface or recessed med cab in EACH room. Why on earth do I want the junk from the other side in my face : ) ?

I think another reason this is not available off the shelf is that bathroom sinks are rarely centered back to back.

What if you placed a narrow one offset in one bathroom and a narrow one offset in the other bathroom so that they were next to each other?

Right Guard-haha--Actually, no, my dad had one in his home. This isn't going over the sink. Its going over the toilets which is why I don't want it to stick out too much so if something falls out, it won't fall in the bowl. That is the only place I have to put it because there are mirrors over the vanities. Anyway, thanks for your suggestions.

Wow, what do you guys keep in your medicine cabinets that's so secret that no-one else should see?

I've seen his and her toilets facing each other in a bathroom. On platforms. I could never quite figure out whether they just wanted their very own and were never in the bathroom at the same time or whether there was something else going on. In any case, I never asked.

I kind of see the point of something that is accessible on both sides, actually you would only need one of a number of things since it would be available to both bathrooms. I actually played with this idea briefly because the medicine cabinet in the hall bathroom is in the 6" deep by 20" wide stud cavity over the in-wall-tank toilet for the ensuite bathroom.

So I did think...what if this was accessible from both sides? And in a house with no kids, I doubt anyone would use it to poke through into the other room or anything. And I have heard people in this house use the bathroom. I hear people using the bathroom at work. People go to the bathroom. Maybe you are going to hear it. I dunno. I try to be as quiet as possible, but I am not really fooling anyone about what's going on in there if they don't hear anything?

Here is why I decided it would not work.

When I put things in a shallow cabinet I tend to want to push them to the back so they don't fall out when I open the door the next time. Well in a double sided cabinet there is no back, you can't lean anything against the back, because it's the front in the opposite bathroom and it will fall out. So you would have to make sure everything was in the center. That's the big reason I passed.

1. Why do you want cabinets over the toilets? It seems like a very awkward location. You'd have to reach over the toilet to open it and then there's the risk of dropping things into the toilet. It doesn't matter how much it sticks out. Most of the stuff people keep in medicine cabinets is used while standing at a sink. That's why these cabinets are typically installed near the sink. Is there no other place in the bathrooms for a medicine cabinet?

2. Cabinets are relatively cheap and shallow enough that even if you want two separate cabinets installed back-to-back, there will be room.

3. Like others, I think this is not a great idea. Just get two separate cabinets and don't install them over the toilet.

I"m not "over reacting", I do think you may be OVER thinking to the point of inconvenience. If it were in fact a great idea...bet there would be some for sale. Yes? A simple misguided push of a bottle will send that, or the item behind it to the floor or sink or toilet or to the "wrong" side. That's why there are none for sale, they all have a back.
