UGH !!! Lapsana communis aka Nipplewort - what to do?
Comments (6)It's an annual, so keep removing them before they go to seed. And yes, every time you disturb the soil more will sprout. The reason is what is called the "soil seed bank." Likely you're dealing with years' worth of seeds. They simply "wait" until conditions are correct for germination. So when they're exposed to light (by tilling or digging or even just weeding), or are at the appropriate depth, and they also receive correct amounts of water, they will grow. Even though that that sounds discouraging, you can win. Continued cropping & weeding cycles will gradually decrease the numbers. Notice that I said "gradually" -- no miracles. Be persistent and you will win....See MoreUgh! What to do when bad advice is given in a magazine??
Comments (3)I sent an email to the editor as did a few other people that I know of. On their facebook page I had commented on what bad advice they printed. They acknowledged it, looked into it (with an expert is what they said) and they agreed that it was poor advice and advised not to do it. Hopefully they will print the good advice on the sparrow spookers in the next issue. Donna...See MoreWhat to do with this ugh 70's half wall paneling?
Comments (13)joanie_b, the finish at the top of the paneling is the same as the trim around the doors - just a basic 2" door trim with the thicker flat edge of the trim facing up. It's not your standard chair rail trim which is more streamlined. One thing I forgot to mention is that the room gets very little natural light. The windows at the den end of the room face east and there is a front porch there, so no direct sunlight after about 9 AM. The door with windows leads out onto a screened porch. So it is a pretty dark room. Thanks, everyone, for your good ideas. Three options are emerging: 1) paint it white to match the doors, 2) paint it the same color as the walls, which will eventually be a warm beige-SW Sand Dollar which I have in adjacent rooms and 3) paint it a softer white color. It is a ridged paneling (varied widths of ridges) so it would look similar to beadboard if painted. I'm going to paint the walls next week and once painted, I'll get some poster board and try the wall color and whites and see what looks good....See MoreUgh! Electrician drilled into custom wood bench ... what to do?
Comments (7)Can't see enough of the wall situation surrounding it to guess why the electrician might have done that. It does seem very weird to put it there without consulting you. On the other hand, I can see how it could be very handy. You're looking for something in your coat pocket or trying to find your shoes and you can just flip on the light. But seeing a wider shot will give more context as to whether this is visually jarring or not. Only you can say how much it bug you to have the cabinetry changed from your plans/vision for it....See MoreOmega flooring LLC
