wasteful pet peeves, continued
Comments (1)You need to make this post in the conversations side, since it doesn't apply to frugal gardening in any way. If you just want to rant about government, cars, doctors, laws and employers it's perfectly OK to do so, but only in the other side. Please read the rules of posting and confine your posts on this side to gardening subjects. Cheryl...See MorePet peeves
Comments (12)I started gardening when I was a kid, and started 'seriously gardening' about 22 years ago. I now have three acres planted with 11 fruit trees (all producing), 66 roses, a 25' X 35' vegetable garden and about 1500' of flower beds that include many heirlooms passed down from my grandmother. I love to garden and have been reading everything here and in the other gardening forums for many years. I have a large collection of gardening books, all of which I have read. I have 8 compost piles and a worm farm, producing many barrels of rich compost. I love everything about the soil, plants, trees and ecology. My pet peeve? I'm not a Master Gardener because I have to work for a living. I have been working full time for the federal government for over 20 years. Until 2006 I was also in the Navy Reserve for 27 years. When I retired from the Reserves I was pretty excited about all that extra time I'd have on the weekends to do more gardening and I inquired with my county about the MG program. Oh, no, I can't become a MG because they only offer classes during the week in the middle of the day. The program is designed for the 'Leisure Class' not working people like me. I'm 57 and will be working full time for several more years. I work in a secure envoronment so my office has no windows. I have been doing this for so long, and some days I never even get to see the sun. I hate working indoors all day, but this work is so important to the fight against terrorism and the security of our nation, that I won't quit until I have to. I guess I'll never be a "Master Gardener" by Parker County's definition, but I've got news for the lot of them. Being truely knowlegeable about soil, plants, landscaping, entomology, pathology and composting doesn't require attendance at classes offered only by them at their convenieence. I've spent many hours in study on line and in libraries. I consider myself to be an expert in the art and science of gardening and when I do retire, I plan to offer my services to the Botanic Gardens as a volunteer gardener and I doubt I'll waste a single day in a classroom trying to earn a title. Kinda makes me sad to say that because I've wanted to get into the program for nearly 20 years. So there it is, my pet peeve. Thanks for letting me vent. Comments (39)We are doing a to-the-studs remodel. One of the parts of the house we are changing is the master suite. Our master bedroom will be very small which was a hard sell with all the architects we met with. We love sleeping in small, cozy spaces. We do not "hang out" in our bedroom at all. We don't have a TV in there or electronics of any kind. (battery alarm clocks and no phone chargers even!) We like it pitch-dark and quiet. I am hoping to avoid window treatments but we will add them if we need to so it will be dark. We are doing a den off the master bedroom which the original house had. We will put a small TV area and exercise equipment in there. I watch real estate shows sometimes and people really want/like huge master bedrooms. Our current home has one. It must serve some purpose (emotional?) or people wouldn't like it so much. Our master bath has more windows than our bedroom. We spend more waking/daytime hours in there! In our current house our garage entrance/laundry room is in the middle of the house. Bedrooms off to one length of the hallway and public areas down the other. It's perfect! The new house will have the laundry room near the kitchen and far from the bedrooms. I do see how it is a hassle to cross a long distance to gather and put away laundry but once I get myself and kids ready in the morning I spend most of my time in the public areas of the house/kitchen and I like to to do laundry everyday so it makes some sense to me to have the laundry room by the kitchen. Location matters a lot. We are in the hot desert and some elements of our house are "green" like having one story and a lot of low ceilings. Other things are NOT green like enormous windows on the south side of our house. Thick adobe houses with tiny windows are appropriate for our climate but I don't want to live like that :) I also love the different tastes/preferences people have! I especially like all the things people want that I don't relate too. However, it doesn't always seem like a lot of home plans necessarily have a lot of thought put in them...so they are less of "different strokes" than simply uninspired? All that to say that there are probably plenty of things about our well-thought-out house that would puzzle or annoy other people!...See MoreDon't read this, I'm just whining about a pet peeve

However - just a tiny thought here (I have done a lot of decorating for my friends): Your widget placement bothers me. Could you possibly move your stove to the opposite wall? I'm thinking that the refrigerator which is currently there would look better closer to the sink anyway. Of course you'd have to remove the upper cabinet, but as you've said in another thread, the cab in your guest bath does need changing out. Then you could position your darling table against the empty wall. I'm wondering if the table should be pink, though. Could you repaint it? A cream paint with crackle-glaze would look lovely. Do you see where I'm going here? You could also repaint that wall - in a rich red, for contrast. Just thinking out loud here. Place the table against the wall, put your sweet widget on it, and that widget is going to pop! Then you wouldn't need so many hoo hoos, although I'd keep all the ding dongs. I don't suppose you'd change out your kitchen hardware to match the ORB of the widget, would you? Simply trying to be helpful (I am a decorator, of sorts). My rabbi agrees that if a widget is glass, it can definitely be kashered for Passover. But - not trying to be irritating - if the widget has plastic, it's never going to be kosher and also, it was made by DuPont, and we all know about them....See Moregeorgect
