Central AC disconnect question
Comments (5)There was a real lag by some of the condenser manufacturers in having their equipment listed for use with circuit breakers. Thuisw meant that fuses were required to protect them (even when a circuit breaker was installed in the panel feeding them) and the disconnect was a simple place to put the fuses. I have not seen any new equipment in the past 5-10 years that was not circuit breaker rated (And most residential breakers are also HACR allowing their use) so the requirement for a fuses has gone away. Volume production lowers cost, and the price difference between a 30 amp and 60 amp is not enough to really justify the smaller device....See MorePackage Unit Heat/AC
Comments (4)Sorry, did not say I plan to DIY, just trying to be knowledgable on it before getting bids. This is not a main home and it can be trouble trying to schedule and even get bids. This would be the second package type unit I have purchased but first was for a beach house where the wiring was allowed to be placed without disconnects since it came through the wall and was placed on stilts. Done with conduit and J boxes all the way back to the panel. Bus Driver, breakers were the ones installed by the mobile manufacturer. Its a 10 year old mobile, I checked and 40A is what the unit calls for on the condenser. Now you are probably right if you meant the air handler (80A) but I think its sized in case all three heat strips are connected. Now as far as one mess to another you might be correct since the unit they put in there is the crappiest thing ever. There are several reasons why I prefer a package type unit, on a home where the ductwork comes through the floor. If this was a stick built home I would "stick" with a split system. Question was this, when you need a disconnect bigger than 60A what do you use, and yes many of the package units I am looking at need more than 60A protection for the heating side....See Morea/c air handler disconnect?
Comments (10)Not here. All the hvac guys I work with refer to it as an air handler if it is a furnace with a coil on top for the AC. After all, it doesn't just heat, it "handles" the conditioned air in the summer also. It would be a gas heater only if it didn't also cool the house in the summer. Maybe where you live air conditioning is not real common? Here it is a necessity....See MoreCentral AC disconnect
Comments (6)"However, if it states "30A FUSE", one IS required." Yep, that makes sense to me, Mike. If a manufacturer specifically calls for a fuse then I reckon you'd have to follow that instruction. What complicates matters, I suppose, is that the term "fused disconnect" is also commonly used to include disconnects with breakers. Similarly, a topical heading like "Fusing" often refers to overcurrent protection in general, whether by breaker or fuse. (BTW, I wasn't aware of manufacturers who specifically require fuses for small residential A/C units these days. But if they're out there, I agree with you.)...See Moremike_home
