Tubular skylights: Velux vs. Solatube vs ?
Comments (14)Hello My name is Christine and I am the owner of Brighter Homes, the local Solatube Premier Dealership. I would be happy to set a time to discuss the features and benefits of a Solatube Daylighting System in detail. In the meantime I did want to clarify the inaccurate information that was posted in response to your question. I have never had a customer complaint that either the Effect Lens or the Diffuser discolor over time; furthermore, I called Solatube International and was told they do not have a problem with discoloration of the lens. Next, considering the climate in Virginia there should not be a problem with condensation however Solatube Daylighting Systems are designed to allow some air transfer from the interior of the system to the exterior. This allows moist air to escape, while also enabling any droplets of water, which may have formed on the dome, to escape via weep holes in the dome. Solatube Daylighting Systems is by far the best product on the market with four patents on the technology that the competition does not have. Our product has patents on Spectralight Infinity Tubing that is 99.7% highly relective, the LightTracker Reflector inside the dome, the Raybender technology of the dome and the Dual Lens Array. Please check out our website for a more complete discussion of the patented technology that Solatube Daylighting Systems have. Please do not hesitate to call me for more information at 460-0703 Here is a link that might be useful: Hampton Roads Daylight...See MoreHelp with hood and skylight symmetry
Comments (4)I have two big Velux vented skylights in my kitchen, one close to the hood above my cooktop. A vented skylight above a cooking area is awesome. We never regretted the installation. We were surprised by the depth of the skylights. It was hard to visualize what they would look like installed. I am not exactly sure what your specific alignment issue is - a diagram might help. For what it is worth, our skylights are not perfectly aligned with our cooktop's cabinet perimeter. The skylight's "tunnel" is about one foot beyond the end of the cabinetry on one side and only about 6 inches from the end of the cabinetry on the other side. Our placement was also dictated by trusses. Honestly, the skylights in our kitchen are never noticed by guests - - they are completely unobtrusive but wonderful sources for light and ventilation. The fact that the skylight tunnels are not perfectly symmetrical with the hood and cabinetry has never been a problem. Oddly enough, I was concerned about the placement and was worried that it would bother me, too, years ago when we put them in. However, there has been no problem in that way. Here is a problem we found with our recent remodel. We installed a better hood fan. The hood fan was installed in the roof directly above the hood. This is in the vicinity of the skylights. Our building inspector was concerned about the placement of the vented skylights. Here is why: turn on hood, hood pumps out greasy and smoky air, vented skylight reallows the greasy and smokey air to enter kitchen again. Bad system. Our contractor from the Wood-Mode dealership told the building inspector that we would promise to close the skylights when we are using the hood exhaust fan. Apparantly, he was OK with that. Thinking about it, I also realized that my skylights will get dirty and greasy fast from the hood exhaust, too. At some point, we will re-route the hood exhaust to a new location that makes more sense. Consider your exhaust fan and the skylight locations. I hope it is not a problem for you like it is for us....See MoreVelux skylight tint/color temperature
Comments (4)Hi Windows on Washington - do you know if going with a bronze skylight will cast a brown tint on the inside of my house? I dont want a brown color in my house as my house is white and pale gray (ie bright) and I dont want it looking muddy. At the same time I want to reduce heat coming in. Any advice on what color of skylight would be helpful (please note the skylight is already there and I am replacing them due to cracks). thank you!...See MoreSkylight replacement Velux vs Wasco.
Comments (12)Hi all, I am hoping this thread is still active and monitored because I could really use some expert help. I had my roofer replace my roof including a 20-year old plastic skylight with the Velux fixed curb mount skylight (see photo below of the old skylight): The problem is that we live close to a highway and we can now hear the outside noise A LOT more than before even though the roofer said the new Velux skylight has the noise reduction feature. The roofer consulted a Velux rep and the rep told him that if he chose a deck mount, it would have reduced the amount of outside noise. The problem is that Velux apparently does not make the fixed deck mount skylights in size 45 1/8 x 45 1/8, but Wasco does. The other option was to do an "additional insulation job" on the already installed Velux curb mount skylight hoping it would dampen the outside noise. I have no idea what that means since I am no roofing expert. (see photo below for the NEW curb mount skylight) Here are my questions, please: What could be the reason why we now hear more noise than before? Would changing from a curb mount to a deck mount reduce the outside noise? Are Wasco skylights just as good with noise reduction as Velux? How would you best solve the problem of the outside noise (without eliminating the skylights :)? Thanks for any advice and recommendations you can provide!...See MoreMiranda33
